1-6 Journal: From Problem to Persuasion

Problem #1 The first problem I want to address is whether addiction is a choice or disease. While both sides of the coin have good arguments they both meet in the middle. For instance it is their choice to pick up the pipe, bottle, and pill why can’t they simply put it down? By using credible sources and my own personal accounts I will deliver the message that it both. It is a choice that can become a disease. I am on the path to one day open up a sober living home; this subject plays a great deal into it. My mother is a recovering gambling addict while my husband is currently battling this monster. I want to help those who need help crawling out of the darkness. Understanding addiction in all its forms is imperative for this.

Problem #2 The Second problem I want to address is whether mental health disorders are strictly medical or is there a mindset to them. This topic plays to my heart; I was diagnosed bipolar II and PTSD from my time in the service. Using credible sources and my personnel experience I will try and make an argument that some mental illness is exacerbated by our choices. I am going for a BA in human services with a concentration in substance abuse, with a minor in criminal justice. Mental illness can play a big part in addiction.

Importance: After exploring both arguments I cannot definitively say which is more important to me to argue. To understand addiction you have to understand mental health issues as they arise.

There is no quick fix it pill or drink. The same for mental health disorders, there is no magic pill. Families are suffering because of both. I might argue that addiction is more of a medical condition/disease for my final essay. There is so much to explore and showing family members that it is more than just a choice in the end will be important to me. My potential audience will be those family members and friends of addicts who are just trying to understand. I want to be able to convince my audience that there is a chemical issue in the brain that prevents the addict from wanting to quit until he/she really wants to. I want to give them the solace that it isn’t them; no amount of begging and bribing will do anything till the addict is ready and why that is. I also want to hopefully point out the differences between two of the major types of addiction; chemical and non-chemical. I believe that coming to grips with this may help some of those who are battling and those who are supporting them....
