Description

Chapter 1 - Introduces uf to the oppressive society Winston lives in - Writing is a diary is a crime- can’t show that he’s self aware - Winston wants to break free of the control of the Party Chapter 2 - Police is greatly feared - Government uses psychological control - Sexual desires are suppressed - Even children are brainwashed - Family bonds are basically nonexistent Chapter 3 - Winston realizes that he can’t remember anything from the past - This is a big step, first towards rebellion - Party is basically brainwashing citizens to look up to them - Party neglects citizens, yet they worship big brother - North Korea Chapter 4 - Big Brother can never be wrong - Leader is like a god to citizens - North Korea again- year of the world beginning was Kim Il-Sung’s birthday - Alters speeches and text so the Party is always right - Everyone is replaceable - Instills a fear factor that they could be vaporized - No proof that anything Winston knows is actually real, could just be the Party twisting reality Chapter 5 - Can’t be smarter than the government - Recurring theme: Big Brother and Party always need to be right - Party has to have complete control- through Newspeak too - Party progresses as people learn less- counterintuitive because usually a nation/country improves but the way the Party operates, the less literate the citizens are, the more oppressed they become. Chapter 6 - Sex is looked down upon because it is pleasurable - Party oppresses people by taking this away - Power of happiness - Repressed sexuality could be cause for rebellion because he remembers times before the Party - Proles are the majority of the population, they outnumber the leaders - Slaves in the South Chapter 7 - Same themes as 6 :) Chapter 8 - Lower class is treated horribly Winston attempts to connect with the past - Very dangerous - Antique shop is literally and figuratively a symbol of the past

Part 2; Chapter 1 - Winston is now acting on his impulses introduced in part 1 - No longer just a thought crime - Literature is representative of freedom Chapter 2 -...
