Plot Notes Part One Chapter 1 (pg 1-20) ○ Big Brother posters everywhere (1, 2) ○ Telescreen received and transmitted simultaneously - can be seen and heard by it (3) ○ Winston cannot remember anything of his childhood (3) ○ As Winston writes, he sits in an alcove*. This allows him to be out of range of the telescreen (6) so that he cannot be seen as he writes in his diary. ○ Party members usually not supposed to go into ordinary shops, but he did, and bought the book (6) ○ **Nothing was illegal, since there were no longer any laws?** (6) ○ Dates are an unknown thing in this book. You may be off by a year or two… (7) ○ Begins writing about a film he saw the other night: ship full of refugees being combed in (8) Mediterranean, huge fat man being shot full of holes, lifeboat of children being bombed. Audience laughed and cheered. A prole woman was angry and made a fuss, police took her out ○ Starts to recall the incident in which he wanted to write about: (9) - A morning in which he was prepping for the Two Minutes Hate, he saw two faces he knew: O’Brien and a dark-haired girl - O’Brien sat a few seats away from Winston, and the dark-haired girl directly behind him in the Records Department to observe the Two Minutes Hate on the big screen - Primary focus of Two Minutes Hate is Emmanuel Goldstein, who delivers attacks on the Party, and advocates freedoms. People hated him, but due to publicity, influence still grew. - While rage went about for Goldstein, Winston realises his hatred was for BB, the Party, (14) and the Thought Police. Also believed Goldstein spoke of truth and sanity in world of lies - *Winston directs his hate to the dark-hair girl, which he desires to have sex with. He (15) describes his violent thoughts about it. - Once Two Minutes Hate is over, crowd chants “B-B” - Winston’s eyes met w/ O’Brien and knew they were thinking the same thing ○ Winston snaps back to reality, realising he had repeatedly filled his diary with “DOWN WITH (18) BIG BROTHER” ○ Left the page in the diary because it made not difference. He committed a Thoughtcrime, whether he would’ve written it or not. All the same. ○ Couldn’t care if he got shot, but was nervous when answering the door. *Alcove: a small space in a room, formed by one part of a wall being further back than the parts on each side, like a carved out spaced for a bookshelf (think about the stove area at home)

Chapter 2 (pg 20-29) ○ Mrs. Parsons at the door, asking for help to fix clogged sink

- Repairs were sanctioned by remote committees, could wait up to 2 years for a window (21) People meant to call everyone comrade, but instinctively for women - “Mrs.” As he was finished and cleaning up, the children run in and boy accuses him of being a traitor (23) Mrs. Parson looked nervous and uneasy about Winston due to her son’s accusations. As Winston is leaving, boy hits Winston w/ catapult, calls Winston “Goldstein”. (24) Winston returns to his room, recalling a dream he had 7 years ago (25) - A person passing him in a pitch-dark room “We shall meet in the place where there is no darkness.” Believed the voice to have been O’Brien’s Newsflash comes on, explaining a victory in South India and describes annihilation of Eurasian army - Also chocolate is reduced from 30 to 20 grams We see everything is inscribed with BB’s face and slogans -- coins, stamps, book covers, cig packs Winston is hoping to be writing to a time when people have free thoughts and truth (28) Washed ink off his hand, carefully placed his diary in the draw w/ a piece of whitish dust on it, left for work.

Chapter 3 (pg 29-37) ○ Dreamt of his mother. Describes his parents - His mother disappeared when he was about 10 or 11. - In the dream, his mother sits with his younger sister in her arms. Both looking at him (29) as they sink in a room of a ship. They had to die for him to live. - Dream scene transitions into a beautiful landscape - pasture, “Golden Country” - Dark-hair girl comes towards him and removes her clothes -- seemed to annihilate the system of thought, was a careless, graceful act. ○ Woke up. Physical Jerks soon after on TV (exercise thing). Had to look content, enjoyable ○ Couldn’t remember anything beyond late Fifties. No records either for referral. Could only remember the country was always at war. ○ Everything was different before (i.e. country names, their shapes on a map). ○ Recalls scene from his childhood - air raid, hiding in a Tube station ○ Currently Oceania at war with Eurasia, alliance with Eastasia. Was the other way around 4 years ago - History was rewritten and the truth denied. “Never an alliance with Eurasia”. Lie passed into history and became the truth. ○ Winston tries to think of when BB, the Party, etc came into existence, but “records” would say otherwise. Lots of propaganda glorifying the Party Chapter 4 (pg 37-) ○ Properly headed to work. Job was to rectify (correct) original figures to make them agree with (39) the later ones, as if the Party’s plans/predictions/promises were true/accurate in the past. - Burned old original true copies in memory hole. Printed and filed corrected copy - Applied to newspapers, books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, photos, cartoons, films, etc - Any kind of literature with possible political or ideological significance ○ d ○ d Chapter 5 (pg 20-) ○ dddd ○ d ○ d
