SCS 100 Perspectives in the Social Science 2-2 Short Answer: Ethical Concerns July 6, 2020 Proposal 1: Racial Predisposition – The aim of this study is to examine the direct link between race and violent criminal activity. In this study, I plan to prove the direct and positive correlation between race and incidence of committing violent crimes. This will then prove that race is the strongest indicator of tendency toward violent crimes. I do not agree with the proposal at all, first, there seems to be a certain bias already going into the study, not including the unethical concern I have about this study. I would want the subjects to know that this study needs to be aligned with their interest and values. I would want them to know if at any time they feel offended or treated unfairly that they could leave and stop the study. I do not believe there are many questions that you could ask that would not offend or even disrespect them as a person and make them uncomfortable. I do not believe this study holds any significant value to our society, and another unethical concern I have is it's discriminating against different races assuming that their skin color is the cause of violent criminal activity. 2. Proposal 2: Electroshock Therapy – In this study, I will examine the effect of electroshock therapy on undesirable behavior in human subjects. This study will administer electrical shocks to human subjects as a disciplinary measure when undesirable behavior is observed. The goal of the study is to determine whether the electroshock therapy is a suitable treatment for resolving disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents. If this therapy is found to be effective, it will be prescribed to resolve disciplinary issues in preteens and adolescents. I cannot agree with this proposal, not only is this unethical, it is unjust and certainly problematic. There are so many unethical concerns here, starting with the subjects' age, preteens, and adolescents since those are age groups that are still growing. This study will cause harm and be detrimental to any human and non-human alike, this study holds no value to society and it certainly does not have any scientific validity. Also, a concern would be informed consent to the patient and family, and patient health afterward. It may remove negative acts or behavior in the children, but at what cost and are we just removing the negative side or could we lose more than that? 3. Proposal 3: Health Problems, Diet, and Socioeconomic Status – This study aims to examine the relationship between health problems (diabetes, heart disease, and obesity), diet, and socioeconomic status. It is proposed that people of lower socioeconomic status are more likely to encounter these problems. Research will be conducted on human subjects where data are collected on diet (the types of food consumed along with money spent on food), and this will be related to the overall health of individuals in the study. The results and findings of this research will be published publicly so others can see the risks of consuming cheap, low-quality food.

I believe this proposal has a social and clinical value. I do have some ethical concerns, one being with your subject selection because you are focusing on just the lower socioeconomic status, that's not what should be the primary basis. I would like to see all three levels of the socioeconomic status involved, to have a greater comparison. Also, a concern would be to make sure their health and welfare are being looked after and that they are informed on what will be going on in this study. Another concern is that you want to make the research public, we need to protect the individuals in this study and make sure that their identities are safe and not made public....
