Description

HCB 1011 Cell Biology

Practical 1: Modeling Cell Structure and Organelles Introduction: There are distinguishing characters among plant and animal cells. This practical on building models helps students to receive hands on training for these lessons. There are several ways to make animal cell models for science class. You have to design your own cell craft. You may plan with your group members and decide the best way to present your model. (Possibly 2-3 person in a group)

Objectives: 1. To learn about the morphology and function of cellular organelles and cell structure by building cell craft 2. To differentiate on the structure and components between animal and plant cell

Materials: Glue Painting colors Marker pens Cardboard Modeling clay (Common household products such as paper clips, buttons, wires, rubber bands, toothpicks etc)

Methods: 1. Find a picture of an animal cell or plant cell. Select a cell picture that is in color because it is easier to identify all the cell parts/organelles 2. Sketch the model and label possible cell parts to build. Plan the construction of the animal cell model and make a list of materials you could use for each cell part. 3. Decide on the size model you are going to make. Keep in mind that a larger model makes it easier to show more parts of the cell 4. Gather possible materials for the cell parts that you will include on the model. For example, a small round ball could be nucleus and a larger rubber band could depict cell membrane. Use common household products when you can to save time and money. Be creative in choosing these materials for your cell parts. 5. Start building the model. Use adhesive glue to make the cell model permanent. Add labels to each cell part. Paint the cell model in contrasting color to define the different parts. 6. Write a report on the cell model you built. Add what each part does in the cell and how you have represented them on your model.

Guidelines: Your model must at least have 5 common organelles and 1 distinguish organelle for either plant or animal cell. The written report should cover the following: 1. List down major differences among plant and animal cells 2. List out all of the organelles in your models and their specific structure and functions 3. Briefly describe how you build the cell (ideas and materials used etc)

Assessment Rubrics: Cell Model – 10 marks Written Report – 10 marks

Date of Submission: Two weeks
