MICHAEL M. COROZA

(1969 – Present) Michael M. Coroza is a multi-awarded poet, essayist, translator, editor, and educator. He is also a singer who has received recognitions within and outside the country. He is the son of Marcial Zorilla Cozora and Salud Urriza Modina. Though his parents were from Majayjay and Liliw, Laguna respectively, he was born in Ermita, Manila on August 26, 1969. He spent his early childhood in San Pablo City, Laguna. His family transferred to Parang, Marikina in 1978. He married Jeanette M. Job, current principal of Maria Asuncion R. Tiñga High School, in 1994. They have three children: Miko Idyanale, Jeanne Haraya and Miguel Bulawan. They have been residents of Nangka, Marikina City since 2005.

He is an Associate Professor at the Department of Filipino, School of Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, handling graduate and undergraduate courses in Filipino Literature (History and Criticism), Creative Writing (Poetry in Filipino), Literary Translation (Theory and Practice), and Language Studies. Michael M. Coroza finished his elementary education at Parang Elementary School in 1982 and his secondary education at the Marikina Institute of Science and Technology in 1986. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts (AB) Major in Philosophy from the University of Santo Tomas in 1990, his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Filipino Literature from the Ateneo de Manila University in 2001, and his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Filipino from the University of the Philippines-Diliman in 2010. He is famous for promoting the traditional poetic genre of the Philippines "balagtasan". He has a column in a literary magazine Haraya (Imagination) and Liwayway (Dawn). He participated in international poetry readings "Kuala Lumpur-10" (2004) and the Second literary festival "Korea-ASEAN" in Jakarta (2011). His works include:            

“Imbisibol Man ang Tatay” is a story of child who longs for his father and eventually finds out that he is an illegitimate child.

JESSICA ZAFRA

(1965 - Present) Jessica Zafra is a fiction writer, columnist, editor, publisher and former television and radio show host. She is known for her sharp and witty writing style. Her most popular book is the Twisted series, a collection of her essays as a columnist for newspaper Today (now Manila Standard Today), as well as from her time as editor and publisher of the magazine Flip. She currently writes a weekly column for The Philippine Star which is called, Emotional Weather Report. She resides in Metro Manila, Philippines, where she is working on her first novel. She also managed the “Eraserheads” during the 90's. She went to St. Theresa's College, Quezon City, from prep school until 6th Grade. After which, she went to the main campus of the Philippine Science High School then to the University of the Philippines and majored in Comparative Literature. Her works often are about current events (both Philippine and international), tennis, movies, music, cats, books, technology and her personal life. Her work has been the subject of academic study. The main ingredient to her work is often fun cynicism and irony. Her works include:   

CHARLSON ONG

(1960 – Present) Charlson L. Ong, born July 6, 1960, is one of the exceptional Creative Writing authors: a fictionist, scriptwriter, and outstanding singer. He obtained an A.B. in Psychology from the University of the Philippines in 1977, and currently teaches literature and creative writing under UP's Department of English and Comparative Literature. He has joined several writers' workshops nationally and abroad, and has acquired numerous grants and awards for his fiction, including the Palanca, Free Press, Graphic, Asiaweek, National Book Award, and the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence.

His novel, “Embarrassment of Riches” published by UP Press in 2002, won the Centennial Literary Prize. In addition to this, Ong has served as co-editor of the Likhaan Book of Poetry and Fiction. His short stories range from parodies of well-loved Filipino texts to insightful treatments of Chinese-Filipino culture. These have been collected into Men of the East and Other Stories (1990 and 1999), Woman of Am-Kaw and Other Stories(1993), Conversion and Other Fictions (1996), Banyaga: A Song of War(2007, Anvil) and Blue Angel, White Shadow (2010, UST). Ong’s other works include:     

NORMAN WILWAYCO

(1972 – Present) Norman Wilwayco, born on 2 October 1972, is a multiple Palanca Award winner (one being the prestigious Grand Prize for the novel in 2002), plays bass for a rock and roll band and designs multimedia web sites. He also writes for Filmless Films (worldwide production company).

He wrote for the popular television show “Batibot” (an educational show for children) and has contributed articles to Liwayway, Manila Times and Inquirer. He was a fellow of the UP Writers Workshop and won the first prize in the Amado Hernandez Award for Literature in 1999 for his short story “Kahon”. He is the one who started the famous blog "Hay! Men! The Blog of real men during nakakalalake,” the complete name of one of the most popular blogs in the Philippines, more known as the “Real men blog”. His work entitled “Guerrilla” was Palanca award winner (one being the prestigious Grand Prize for the novel in 2002) he was awarded many times in Carlos Palanca Awards. He was a fellow of the UP Writers Workshop and won the first prize in the Amado Hernandez Award for Literature in 1999. His book “Responde” reflects the image of life in the depths of our society. The bottom of society who is always striving, and accustomed to living in poverty or live in normal life difficulties. The story features the types of poor neighborhoods and basically the current situation of most Filipino communities. Reading it, you will witness the typical life, and how to live such unfortunate fate like addictions, sexual and school-tumor, slums, squatter punks, activists, communist, and other forms of human.

His “How I Fixed My Hair After a Rather Long Journey” is Norman's triple Wilwayco Palanca-winning novel, which won in 2002, won as a short story in 2000 and won best screenplay last 2003.

ANA MARIA LYKES

A BS computer science degree holder and a master’s in Creative Writing, Ana Maria Villanueva-Lykes discovered the world of words around year 2008. Since then she has been published in The Philippines Free Press, Philippine Graphic, Reader’s Digest, and several collections and anthologies. She trained with the Philippine Daily Inquirer for two years before she moved on to other publications. She left her job as an editor-in-chief for AsianTraveler magazine and as a travel columnist for a local paper in the U.S. to focus on being a mother. She continues to contribute for a few publications nationally and abroad and contributes columns for the online platform of The Philippine Daily Inquirer. She is also a writer for the blog “Pinay.com” where she goes with the name “Ana Viajera.” She currently lives in the United States with her family.

JANET B. VILLA

Janet B. Villa graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo School of Law in 1991 and an AB Economics degree from the UP School of Economics. She practiced law for 9 years before she joined the National Writers’ Workshop in May 2001 in Dumaguete and immediately enrolled that June at UP Diliman for an Master of Arts in Creative Writing. Her first published story “Undercurrents” won the NVM Grand Prize in 2003. Her second published story “Closopen” won the NVM Grand Prize Special Prize in 2005. (The N.V.M. Gonzalez Short Story Awards were held in the Philippines, calling for the best short story of the year written by a Philippine citizen, and presented annually by the University of the Philippines’ Creative Writing Center and N.V.M., Inc. T from 2000-2005) She is an editor, a ghostwriter, Fiction and nonfiction writer, writer for various magazines and corporations, and a language coach. She is a trainer in Effective Business Writing, in Technical Writing, in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL, on grammar), and in Creative Writing for the offices and corporations such as the Embassy of Canada, Petron Philippines, Meralco, San Miguel Corporation, Wyeth Philippines, Globe Telecommunications, and more.

NAYA S. VALDELLON

Yavana “Naya” S. Valdellon grew up in Manila, Philippines and has worked as a magazine editorial assistant, freelance copy editor, content writer for a website design company, and literature and writing composition teacher. She graduated with a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in 2002 in Creative Writing from the Ateneo de Manila University, where she was Associate Editor of Heights- the university's official literary publication. In 2006, she moved to Canada to take her M.A. in English and Creative Writing at the University of Toronto. She has written numerous poetries which garnered her multiple awards including Maningning Miclat Award for Poetry in 2003, the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 2004 and 2005, the Meritage Press Poetry Prize in 2002 and 2007, and the Hart House Poetry Prize in 2007. Her chapbook, “The Reluctant Firewalker”, was published by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) in 2005 as part of its Ubod New Authors Series. Her work has been published in various magazines and anthologies, including The Hart House Review, Philippines Free Press, Sunday Inquirer Magazine, Likhaan, Heights, Tomas, Kritika Kultura, Caracoa, and One Hundred Love Poems. She is currently based in Toronto, Canada, where she is a member of Diaspora Dialogues and takes recreational ballet, contemporary and tango classes. Her works include:  

ROSMON TUAZON

Rosmon Tuazon is an outstanding poet, can sing, and more known as the advocacy head of Maynilad. He is the author of the book Mula (2005) in which he compiled his works. He graduated with a degree in Legal Management from the University of Santo Tomas, and took his MA in Malikhaing Pagsulat (Creative Writing) in University of the Philippines- Diliman. His poetry has won numerous campus and national awards, and the top prize in the 2005 Palanca awards, Filipino Poetry Division. He is married to fellow Thomasian writer Natasha Gamalinda and currently resides in Marikina City. Some of his works were:       

LOURD DE VEYRA

(1975- Present) Born on February 11, 1975, Lourd Ernest Hanopol de Veyra is a multi-awarded Filipino musician, poet, journalist, broadcast personality, and activist who first became famous for being the vocalist of Manila-based jazz rock band Radioactive Sago Project. Veyra’s father was a retired policeman while his mother is a pianist by profession and dietician by training. He studies grade school at Quirino Elementary School and at Colegio de San Juan de Letran for high school. He graduated at University of Santo Tomas with Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. He started his Master’s in Creative Writing twice (once in UP, the other time in UST) but only finished two semesters. His interest in writing started only on his second year in college. His biggest influences are Dr. Ophelia Alcantara Dimalanta, Teddy Boy Locsin, and Nick Joaquin while his literary influences are Allen Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac. It took him an hour to write his speech for the UP Commencement exercises where he coined the term “GMG” (Google mo, G***) for this generation. In here, he point out inefficiency is one of the biggest problems of a lot of young people today. He was copy editor for Metro Society Magazine for seven years and hosted tv shows for TV5 like Tayuan Mo at Panindigan and “History with Lourd”. He is also known for his criticism and comments against some of the country’s most prominent figures. He is not afraid to express his opinion about almost all imaginable issues this side of the planet. His bestselling novel “Super Panalo Sounds!” Was 10 years in the making. He has thrice been a recipient of a Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature - A Third prize in essay

(English division) in 1999, a second prize in the same category in 2003; and a first prize in teleplay (Filipino division) in 2004. Lourd De Veyra’s works include:        

PAUL B. ZARAFALLA

A Fine Arts graduate, and a doctorate in University of the is a prolific writer both in prize-winning painter and art 1938 in Upon, Pinili, Ilocos

holder of M.A. in Education Communications from the Philippines, Paul B. Zafaralla Iloko and English and a critic. He is born on June 22, Norte.

He is a member of Gunglo Daguiti Mannurat nga Ilokano (GUMIL), one of the most active association of Ilokano writers. He is a multilingual writer (Iluko, English, Filipino) on Ilocano and Philippine culture and the arts for the past 51 years. His outlets are Bannawag, Rima, Iluko anthologies, lectures, English broadsheets, popular and professional magazines, journals, and classrooms. He enjoys regional, national and international recognitions for his incisive and scholarly critiques. At the University of the Philippines where he received his degrees (BFA, MAED, Ph. D in Communication), his body of published works had been duly recognized. The Manila Critics Circle awarded him the 2004 National Book Award for Rice in the Seven Arts; Pinili-Metro Manila Residents Associations, Inc., awarded him the Don Ignacio Lafrades Award for Distinguished Achievement. SANTIAGO B. VILLAFANIA

(1971 – Present) Santiago B. Villafania, born on January 31, 1971 at Tuliao, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan, Philippines, is a bilingual poet based in Manila who writes in English and in his native language, Pangasinense. Villafania finished a Bachelor of Arts degree Major in English at the University of Pangasinan in 1991. Some of his poems have appeared in local and international print and web publications. Villafania advocates for the resurgence of Pangasinan as a literary language. He was awarded the Writer of the Year (2004) by the Ulupan na Pansiansia’y Salitan Pangasinan (Association for the Preservation of the Pangasinan Language) and Award of Merit (2005) by the Association of Writers and Authors for Regional Development (Region I) for his first book, Pinabli tan arum ni’ran Anlong (Beloved and Other Poems) published in 2003. His Balikas na Caboloan (Voices from Caboloan, 2005) published by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) under its UBOD New Authors Series. His second book of poems, Malagilion: Soniton Pangasinan, is an attempt to open the propylaea (monumental entrance) of literary renaissance in Pangasinan. He also came out with a chapbook of his poems in English titled Murtila. Villafania has been published/ anthologized in several countries and some of his poems have been translated into several languages, including Spanish, Italian, Arabic, and Hindi. His unpublished book of poems 'Murtami' was translated into Hindi entitled 'Premanjali' and was released in the New Delhi World Book Fair in 2013. He is a member of the Philippine PEN and currently a commissioner for the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission and teaches literature at Emilio Aguinaldo College Manila.

CLES B. RAMBAUD

Clesencio B. Rambaud of Pinili, Ilocos Norte, is presently the Managing Editor of Bannawag magazine, published by the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation with offices at Intramuros, Manila. He studied Engineering and has been with Bannawag for three decades rising in the rank from proof reader to news editor, literary editor and associate editor. He has received numerous writing grants for Ilocano poetry from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (NCCA Philippines). He is also a recipient of the Gawad Emmanuel Lacaba for his poems, novels and essays, focusing on the Ilocano culture and customs, which have influenced the young writers of today. He received the 2011 Gameng Lifetime Achievement Award for Literature by the Gameng Foundation, Inc. for Museo Ilocos Norte and the 2000 Gawad Emmanuel Lacaba by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) 'for his poems, novels and essays which have influenced young writers, and featured the culture and customs of the Ilocano people. He has also received writing grants from the Cultural Center of the Philippines for an Ilokano Novel

(1991), Ilokano Children’s Story (1993), and Ilokano Poetry (1995). His poetry collection won the 2009 NCCA Writers’ Prize for Ilokano poetry. Some of his works include:       
