Madison Whitely October 9, 2020 Leadership 4.2 Case Study Questions 1. In their roles for the college, how would you categorize Alice’s and Heather’s task and relational leadership behaviors? Using the format in the following grid, rate each woman’s predisposition toward each behavior type (on a scale of 1–10, with 10 being high). In the explanation column, support your rating with examples. Behavior Type

Rank 1–10

Explanation

Task Alice 8 Alice is a lot more task oriented when it comes to her leadership behaviors, not only does she help run O.D.O.G. and work at the college, but also grows her own vegetables and has her own garden. One of the very first things said about Alice is how her day is filled with “to-do’s”. As much as she does also care about her relationship with her employees, she definitely surrounds her leadership style into being more about tasks and being structurally organized. Heather 5 Heather is not as task oriented as Alice is, even though she does keep those things in mind, Heather is much more of a relationship-based type of leadership. No one who is a leader can go without having some sort of task leadership, so Heather is still able to handle this but takes these approaches much more in the direction towards what other people may want. Relationship 5 Alice is mentioned to be very entuned Alice with her relationships with her employees, customers, and fellow college community. However, she is must more of a task-oriented person wanting to always keep on top of her tasks, so she is a lot more task leadership based. She does take personal interest in each of her employees though. She leads her team members through exercises such as team building, empowerment, and coaching, as well as building trust with them.

Heather 9 Due to having cancer is her twenty’s, Heather became very compassionate and cares a lot about people. She describes her primary focus as “maintaining the culture” when it comes to the team and college. She believes that having ongoing communication internal and external with customers helps to build relationships; and is primarily focused on keeping and maintaining a good line with these relationships in order to garner trust. 2. Looking at your rankings in question 1, do you feel the two women’s leadership styles complement each other? Why or why not? I believe they do complement each other because one person is stronger than the other in each category. They equally kind of balance each other out in both aspects, even though

they both still have these skills individually, it definitely helps a lot that they are able to use the others abilities in order to help their organization and careers. They seem to both have a well understanding of both, but both come from different backgrounds that therefore affect how they communicate and lead their teams and people, as well as how they are themselves. 3. How would you rate the importance of task behaviors vs. relationship behaviors in their leadership of Operation D.O.G.? Is one behavior more important in these roles than the other? Will Alice and Heather be equally as effective in running the nonprofit as they appear to be at the college? Explain your answer. I think relationship behaviors in Operation D.O.G. is very important compared to task behaviors, as much as it’s needed to keep day to day tasks in order, O.D.O.G. find it important to keep a healthy relationship both with the pets and the owners. This helps Alice and Heather to build up more trust in their business and the relationships they develop overtime with their clients. Since Alice and Heather are also a little different when it comes to their leadership styles, I think it will help to evenly balance out one another and the issues that they might come head to head with. This will help them to effectively run their nonprofit since Alice steers her leadership a lot more in the direction of given tasks and directions, which will help to set up their structure internally for the nonprofit. Meanwhile, Heather steers her leadership style to be a lot more relationship based which will help to build clients and their trust in the organization....
