The Behavior Assessment System for Children - BACS-3 The Behavior Assessment System for Children, Third Edition (BASC-3) is an integrated system designed to facilitate the differential diagnosis and classification of a variety of social and behavioral disorders of children and to aid in the design of treatment plans. The BASC is used to identify the presence of externalizing and internalizing maladaptive behaviors in the form of behavioral excesses, i.e. the child exhibits too much, or behavioral deficits, i.e. the behavior is viewed as limiting or excluding participation.

Scores on the BASC-3 that are between 41 and 59 are considered within the Average range. Scores between 60 and 69 are considered At-Risk and scores 70 or above are considered Clinically Significant. The Adaptive Scales are rated differently, however. Scores on the Adaptive Scales between 41 and 59 are considered Average. Scores between 31 and 40 are considered At-Risk, and scores 30 or below are considered Clinically Significant.

BASC-3 Teacher Rating Scales-Child: TRS-C Ages 6-11 The BASC-III TRS-C is a comprehensive measure of a child’s adaptive and problem behaviors in the school setting designed for use by teachers or others who fill a similar role. The BASC scales in the TRS-C consist of over 100 statements about behavior and include the following composite scores: Externalizing problems (hyperactivity, aggression and conduct problems), Internalizing problems (anxiety, depression and somatization), School problems (attention and learning problems), Behavioral symptoms index (BIS) (atypicality and withdrawal), and Adaptive skill composite (adaptability, social skills, leadership, study skills and functional communication).

BASC-3 Parent Rating Scales-Child: PRS-C Ages 6-11 The BASC-III PRS-C is a comprehensive measure of a child’s adaptive and problem behaviors in the home setting and is designed for use by parents or guardians. The BASC scales in the PRS-C consist of over 100 statements about behavior that include the following composite scores: Externalizing problems (hyperactivity, aggression, and conduct problems), Internalizing problems (anxiety, depression, and somatization), Behavioral Symptoms Index (attention problems, atypicality, and withdrawal), and Adaptive skills (adaptability, social skills, leadership, functional communication, and activities of daily living).

Summary-Results On February 26, 2017 the School Psychologist received a completed BASC-3 TRS-C to provide a measure of Giselle’s behaviors in the school setting as observed by Mr. Nichols. Mr.

Nichols completed the TRS-C by rating Giselle’s behaviors on a 4-point scale (Never, Sometimes, Often, Almost Always). Based on Mr. Nichols’ responses Giselle’s behavior in the classroom is significant. Her composite scores for all 5 areas, Externalizing Problems, Internalizing Problems, School Problems, Behavioral Symptoms Index, and Adaptive Skills are all significant. In terms of Externalizing Problems, Internalizing Problems, School Problems, and the BSI Giselle falls between the 94th-99th percentile which indicates that in the classroom Giselle is showing more hyperactivity, aggression, attention problems, etc. than 94-99% of other students her age. Likewise, Giselle’s behavior in the classroom shows low Adaptive Skills. Within these composites Giselle shows strengths in the Anxiety sub scale and the Somatization sub scale as well as the Social Skills sub scale which all fell below the at-risk mark.

On February 26, 2017 the School Psychologist received a completed BASC-3 PRS-C to provide a measure of Giselle’s behaviors in the home setting as observed by her mother, Brittany Gamble. Giselle’s mother completed the PRS-C by rating Giselle’s behaviors on a 4-point scale (Never, Sometimes, Often, Almost Always). It was reported by Giselle’s mother that her behavior outside of school falls within the average range in terms of Internalizing Problems. This composite score encompasses Anxiety, Depression, and Somatization. Compared to the results from the TRS-C Giselle shows that she has strengths in terms of lower levels of anxiety and

somatization specifically. It was also reported that her behavior outside of school is significant in terms of Externalizing Problems, Behavioral Symptoms Index, and Adaptive skills. This means that Giselle may exhibit hyperactive behavior, aggression, conduct problems, attention problems, atypicality, and withdrawal behavior more than her peers while exhibiting adaptability, social skills, leadership, functional communication, and activities of daily living skills less than her peers. Although, within these composites Giselle shows lower levels of atypicality and withdrawal in her behavior. Also, it is reported that Giselle’s functional communication and activities of daily living skills do not fall within the at-risk or clinically significant range.
