Why Ask Why? 1. Comment on what you think drives a scientist like Stephen Hawking to ask, "Why? Stephen Hawking’s passion to understand the Universe is what drives a Scientist like him to ask “why?” He has a need and a goal to understand everything about the Universe and how the Universe ever came into existence. 2. How has Hawking's research contributed to the field of natural science? His research contributed to us understanding our Universe, including the Cosmos, by changing the way we see it. His exceptional work on Quantum Physics and Quantum Mechanics helped us learn about black holes and the radiation they emit. He proved that black holes can eventually shrivel up and die. His research is very important and vital to the field and the future of Science. 3. When you consider the work of natural scientists in general, how do you think developments in scientific thinking end up influencing how a scientific study is carried out? Give an example. The normal progress of a Scientific study is observation to hypothesis to experimentation to the conclusion; however, Scientific developments are commonly carried out with observation being the most important influence on how the Scientific study is carried out. Also, new developments and new theories are influenced by current proven Scientific studies. This means that new answers build into new questions and they continue to build on each other into an endless circle of knowledge and inquiry. Stephan Hawking was a brilliant man and he realized that knowledge is not just what you know but, having the understanding that things are constantly changing. He is known for saying, “The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. Intelligence is the

ability to adapt to change.” AN EXAMPLE: The question that I would like to identify from my 4-2 Project 2 worksheet is, “What are the chemical components in Iron-60 and why is it rare?” This is a great example because through understanding the components in the snow, Scientists are able to understand our Environment in our solar system better. This proves how the answer to my question essentially leads to more questions about the Antarctica snow and our solar system’s atmosphere.
