Why do you think there is value in understanding and studying the natural sciences when considering not only the impact of science on the global community, but to each of us individually?

Being more scientifically informed benefits all of society. The more knowledge that we have allows us to make better and more informed choices. It allows us to act and correct situations that are detrimental to us all. Paul Gilding’s Ted Talk presentation “The Earth is Full” gave great examples of how we can correct the danger we face as a society to the challenge of using all of our resources. A powerful statement he made in the presentation was how changing how we think and feel and turn that into action. “We need to accept the fear and then we need to act. We need to act like the future depends on it. We need to act like we only have one planet.” The value in understanding as well as studying the natural sciences allows us to shine a light on issues that affect us every day. By using what we learn from our environment, we can empower ourselves to make better choices. By using science, we have solid facts of our world and how we interact within it. Though sometimes the answers are frightening, have stable and concrete information allow us to find solutions and subsequently change our environment....
