8-4 Project 2 Short Answer Responses about Human Expression Quantella Gregory HUM-100

Explain why you believe humans have a need to express themselves through created artifacts. Explain the larger human need to express using the insights you gained from studying your artifact. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation. For centuries mankind has created artifacts for various purposes. Certain artifacts can be used as symbolism or to spread a message. These types of artifacts can serve as a call for more social involvement for a certain social cause, communication of message or simply a form of expression. I believe humans have a need to express themselves through created artifacts because we need to express feelings, ideas, views, and beliefs. Humans desire and are motivated through creative expression. When Native Americans created their weapons, their need at the time was to survive using what nature provided. Through creating artifacts we are able to study ourselves, cultures, the world, and humanity. We also need to share our story. In studying my artifact The Akua’ba fertility doll of Ghana. I have found out that Akua'ba (sometimes spelled Akwaba or Akuba) are wooden ritual fertility dolls from Ghana and nearby areas. The best known akua'ba are those of the Ashanti people, whose akua'ba have large, disc-like heads. Other tribes in the region have their own distinctive style of akua'ba. Traditionally, these dolls are carried on the back of women either hoping to conceive a child, or to ensure the attractiveness of the child being carried. When not in active use, the akua'ba would be ritually washed and cared for. The treatment of the Akua'ba has been described as an example of traditional beliefs that corresponds to the occult belief of sympathetic magic. These dolls have significance in each element of their design: they have a small mouth for a quiet baby, a large forehead for great intelligence, and a pregnant belly for good nutrition. White beads are used to symbolize the innocence of the baby. Today, one is more likely to see a mass-produced akua'ba for sale as a souvenir than an heirloom in ritual use. Traditional use does, however, continue in some areas. The form of the akua'ba has also gained currency as a general symbol of good luck. In the article Why We Make Art, seven artists detailed some reasons they make art. The common theme amongst all seven of them was that it was a form of creative expressions rather it is to create, remember or simply tell a story or message. (J. Marsh & J. A. Smith, 2009)

Explain how you think the act of human creative expression impacts and is impacted by the culture in which it was created. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation. The act of human creative expression is impacted by the culture in which it was created by the creator being influenced by their culture, their religion(s), and their society. It’s also impacted by the culture in which it was created in because of using contents or materials from that culture or society. The relationship between human creative expression and the culture it was created in is people from different cultures have different ideas, beliefs, and views. I think different cultures also have assorted ways of doing their creative process. I don’t think the human creative expression can be done without the creator’s culture influencing it. I believe everything we have covered, our discussions in class, the professor sharing with us throughout our discussions, and our assignments and projects are what form and helped me with my explanation.

Explain how you believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today. Use the insights you gained from studying your artifact to explain how creative expression can impact today’s issues. Detail how a person and/or concept encountered in this course has informed your explanation. I believe human creative expression can impact issues we deal with today by changing views and opinions, encouraging values, and sharing impressions or experiences. The social climate of America today is very unstable. Issues of racism, sexism, and other injustices being done towards people of color and sexual orientation is overwhelming. Social media has been key in bringing these often-hidden atrocities to the forefront to receive justice. The creative expression through social media has brought about social change and creation of policies. It is through the online sharing viral videos of senseless police shootings that have prompted many law enforcement agencies to look at their procedures. Many have gone as far as to require their police officers to wear and have on their body cameras. While studying my artifact it was evident that I only chose that artifact because it was of an interest to me. Growing up in a family full of islanders who always talk about the Ashanti Tribe and its culture and traditions peaked my interest for sure. I was aware that it was a gift with an intent to bring solace to many that had lost just giving up hope to conceive and become mothers. These dolls were and still received with love and good intent. One assignment in the course I can think of that can back up my explanation is the relationship between human creative expression and culture. For that assignment, we had to choose an artifact that represent the LGBT community and read an article “The Joy Luck Club”. We all know that the LGBT community have fought for their rights and still fighting for their rights. The show “Fosters” is to me a great example of the LGBT community fight/rights. The article was a in powering article to read, the life of women who are different nationality. The women fought to become who they are and fought for what they want. So what I am saying to fight is not really “fight”, but more standing up for what is right, equal, human, kind, etc.
