Underlying Principles

(E.G., DELEGATION, LEVELS OF PREVENTION, ADVANCE DIRECTIVES)

-Cutaneous stimulation in the form of cold and heat applications helps relieve pain and promotes healing. -Promoting venous return is another key component of reducing the complications of immobility -Body mechanics involves coordination between the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, and the use of alignment, balance, gravity, and friction. -Movement depends on an intact skeletal system, skeletal muscles, and nervous system. -Assessment focuses on mobility, range of motion (ROM), gait, exercise status, activity tolerance, and body alignment while standing, sitting, and lying.

REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER 40 ___________

Nursing Interventions WHO? WHEN? WHY? HOW?

-Mobility is freedom and independence in purposeful movement. Mobility refers to adapting to and having self-awareness of the environment. Functional musculoskeletal and nervous systems are essential for mobility. -Immobility is the inability to move freely and independently at will. The risk of complications increases with the degree of immobility and the length of time of immobilization. Periods of immobility or prolonged bed rest can cause major physiological and psychosocial effects.

-Use extreme caution with clients who are very young or fair-skinned, and older adults because they have fragile skin. -Clients who are immobile might not be able to move away from the application of it becomes uncomfortable. They are at an increased risk for skin injuries. -Clients who have impaired sensory perception might not feel numbness, pain, or burning. -Use minor temperature changes and short-term applications of heat or cold for best results. -Avoid long applications of either heat or cold because this can result in tissue damage, burns, and reflex vasodilation (with cold therapy).
