Description

Adeline Yen Mah Adeline Yen Mah was born in Tianjin, China. She lived in Shanghai in her childhood years and then moved to Hong Kong. Later in her life she would sent to England to study Medicine. Adeline’s mum died 2 weeks after Adeline was born, so she was considered bad luck to the family and felt rejected by them ever since. The first time Adeline can ever recount her father talking to her singily was when she topped her class and won a medal at a very young age. Aunt Baba acted as the mother Adeline never had. Her step-mother always favored her own children over her stepchildren. When Adeline was fourteen she entered a writing competition and won which no child from Hong Kong had won for many, many year. It was based on Adeline’s life with some tweaks here and there. It was announced in the Hong Kong paper which her father saw and was so proud of her. Adeline was begging her father to send her to a school in England which he did not respond to until she won the competition. So when he did he told her he would send her to a school in England, which lifted Adeline’s spirit up and over the moon! Right after Fallen Leaves Adeline wrote Chinese Cinderella which is basically Fallen Leaves but for children.
