Description

Kevin Tulsie Theology Alley Pond Park

On October 5th, 2013 I went to Ally Pond Park with my classmates for theology. A quick description of Alley Pond Park is it is the second-largest public park in Queens, New York. It occupies 655.294 acres, most of it acquired and cleared by the city in 1929, as authorized by a resolution of the New York City Board of Estimate in 1927.The park is bordered to the east by Douglaston, which is in Queens. The park occupies part of a terminal moraine, a ridge of sand and rock, that was formed by a glacier 15,000 years ago, at the southern terminus of the Lauren tide ice sheet. As I went there I saw so many different stuff. I saw an entire watershed, kettle ponds in a mature oak and beech forest on the terminal moraine, fresh water wetlands supported by ground water seeps and artesian springs on the outwash plain, and abundant salt-marsh along Alley Creek and its confluence with Little Neck Bay. The two best birding areas are in the Alley Wetlands and Upper Alley Woodlands, as I was told. We even saw a hawk! But then I wondered to myself how all of this was created. If God created humans, he had to create the animals and everything else I saw at the park. I think this is how theology tides into the environment because God created everything around us. Without God, there would be no environment and also no humans. I have learned so many things from this trip. The main one is that I learned to appreciate the environment. By this I mean I am thankful for what God has given to me. He wanted us to be surrounded by amazing things and he did that. I

learned that on my trip. By going on this trip it showed me God wanted us to appreciate other things than ourselves. Today I have learned that. Other things that I learned are it helped me to understand the environment and the awareness of nature. Also, it showed me how much people do care about the environment. I never really believed that people took care of the environment, but now I realize there are many people that do care. That showed me that I should too, but everyone else should took care of the environment. When I went to the park and saw how cleaned the environment was, I thought if everyone cleans up their own mess the whole world will be a clean place, where everyone would want to live. This learning community also showed me several things. One thing is it encouraged me to do other participation in the community. Even though I volunteer at a hospital, I would like to do more experiences for the community such as working at Ally Pond Park. I think if I worked there I would better understand the environment than I do right now. Overall I loved Alley Pond Park. It taught me so many things such as God must have created environment because he created everything including us humans. That is how theology is tied together with the environment. I also learned so many things such as appreciating the environment, it helped me to understand the environment, and showed me the awareness of the nature. If I got a chance to work in the environment I would definitely work at Alley Pond Park, because it was their where I realize the environment meant so much to us humans....
