Alma Setting 1) Identify the setting (Location, historical time, social circumstances). The location of the short film Alma seems to be in a European city just by the buildings and city layout. The country somewhat resembles France and is set in the winter months. The toys in the shop are very old fashioned as well as the old-fashioned bike which look like they could be from the 1950s. The streets were completely empty which tells me something is happening like a war which could either be world war 1 or world war 2.

2) How does the setting of the story contribute to the atmosphere / mood of the story? The setting of Alma contributes to the creepy and eerie atmosphere the story creates. The empty streets also give us the feeling something isn’t right and give the film a creepy vibe. The narrow streets and old fashion buildings make us feel like the story is taking place in the past and the snow just adds to the edgy atmosphere. Plot 1) Identify and explain the climax of the story.

The climax of the story occurs as Almas attention is caught by the doll in the window. She tries to open the door and fails as it is locked and starts to walk away. The door then mysteriously opens on its own and Alma walks in. This point is the climax of the story as it is the most important event, as if she couldn’t enter the store she would never have gotten stuck inside a doll. Is also the turning point in the story. 2) What is the main conflict in the story? The main conflict in the short film Alma was between her and the blond doll. The blond doll lured her into the store despite many warning signs such as the locked door and the toy bike trying to escape. The result of this was Alma being stuck in a doll with no way of escaping and whoever was stuck in the doll being freed. Characters 1) What are the most significant characteristics of the protagonist? The most significant characteristics of Alma the protagonist are her gullibility and curiosity. The whole reason she got into the situation was because of her curiosity. The doll in the window caught her attention and she had to touch it. She was very easily tricked into getting trapped by the doll and failed to recognize many warning signs making her very gullible. 2) What function do the secondary characters serve in the story? The secondary characters in the film add to the creepy atmosphere. The only other characters in the story are spirits trapped in dolls that move on their own which makes it feel like a horror movie. Considering they do not speak they gave us insight

into the story, for example the bike banging against the door let me know something bad was going to happen. Atmosphere 1) What is the mood of the story? How do you know? The mood in the film was very creepy and unsettling based on the music choice which gave us the impression something bad was going to happen. The clothing Alma wore was bright, but the background was very dark and dull giving an ominous mood. The sound effects also effected the mood as they were echoed and louder than the music. Symbols 1) What symbols do you feel exist in the story and explain what they represent? The first symbol in the film I noticed was the mouth shaped shop which resembled a monster symbolizing that once she was in, she would not come out. When she is reaching for the doll the carpet she is standing on is shaped as a target which symbolized that she was the next victim. The signatures on the wall outside the store represent she isn’t the first victim. Theme 1) Identify several themes that are addressed in the story. One theme I recognized in the story were the dangers of curiosity. As Almas curiosity gets the best of her and she ends up in a horrible situation. Can be applied to life as sometimes minding your own business is best. A second theme in this film

was reading between the lines. I feel Alma was given multiple warnings through different signs that danger was ahead in which she failed to recognize as warnings. With a little bit of thought Alma could have avoided the situation....
