Description

BSC 1085L Lab Manual Pages 181-86 Exercise 15 Spinal Cord, Spinal Nerves and Human Reflexes Use your lab manual and these websites to learn about the spinal cord and reflexes. 1,2. Learn the parts of the Spinal Cord cross section shown in 15.2. List their functions. Use this website to label the spinal cord: https://www.getbodysmart.com/ap/nervoussystem/cns/spinalcord/menu/menu.html Click on Gray Matter Anatomy and White Matter Anatomy to help you ID the picture on this document. Use the Gray Matter and White Matter Function options to get your function information. White Matter- it allows the messages to pass quickly from place to place. Dorsal column- is a sensory pathway of the central nervous system that conveys sensations of fine touch, vibration, two-point discrimination, and proprioception (position) from the skin and joints Ventral column- contains the cell bodies of motor neurons that send axons via the ventral roots of the spinal nerves to terminate on striated muscles Lateral column- contains neurons supplying nerves to the muscles of the limbs, preganglionic cell bodies of the autonomic nervous system and sensory relay neurons Dorsal root- transmits sensory information, forming the afferent sensory root of a spinal nerve Ventral root- spinal nerve contains outgoing, efferent fibers that carry information destined to control motor or glandular function Spinal nerve- mixed nerve, which carries motor, sensory, and autonomic signals between the spinal cord and the body Gray Matter- contains most of the brain's neuronal cell bodies Ventral horn- contains the cell bodies of motor neurons that send axons via the ventral roots of the spinal nerves to terminate on striated muscles Lateral horn- present primarily in the thoracic region, and contain the preganglionic visceral motor neurons that project to the sympathetic ganglia Dorsal horn- found at all spinal cord levels and is comprised of sensory nuclei that receive and process incoming somatosensory information Central Canal- a fluid-filled space in the spinal cord that has a protective function and allows for nutrient transport Posterior median sulcus- is the posterior end of the posterior median septum of neuroglia of the spinal cord Anterior median fissure- provides a groove in which the anterior spinal artery sits. From here, it provides the anterior part of the spinal cord

3. Label the 3 layers of the meningeal coverings of the spinal cord shown in figure in the above figure 4. Be able to identify the spinal nerves on the diagram of the spine in figure 15.4 of the lab manual. 5. Look up what a spinal plexus is? List the 4 plexi found in table 15.1. List which spinal nerves are part of each one and identify which muscles are controlled by each plexus. Cervical- head, neck, and shoulders Brachial- Chest, shoulders, arms, and hands Lumbar- Back, Abdomen, Groin, Thighs, Knees, and Calves Sacral- Pelvis, Buttocks, Genitals, Thighs, Calves, and Feet Coccygeal- Small Region over the Coccyx 6. Practice naming the parts of the spinal cord with this website prior to taking the exit quiz: https://www.purposegames.com/game/identify-parts-of-the-spinal-cord-quiz

Exercise 16 Pages 189-92 1. Define reflex- an action that is performed as a response to a stimulus and without conscious thought 2. Label the 5 parts of a reflex arc(#’s 2-6 in figure) and describe the function of each part.

3.

Perform activities 1, 2, 3. If possible, use a partner to do these Human Reflex tests on each other: patellar, calcaneal & plantar. If you cannot work with someone try to find them on yourself. List the clinical significance of each reflex....
