Description

A & P I Lab Exercise 6 Exercise 6: The Integumentary System Upon completion of this lab exercise the student will be able to: 1. Identify on the model 

Skin Structure o Epidermis  Stratified squamous epithelial tissue (keratinized)  List name and role of 4 types of epidermal cells  On the model be able to identify the 4 layers of the epidermis o Dermis be able to locate these parts in the dermis of the skin model and list their functions. o Hypodermis o Arrector pili muscle o Hair follicle and Hair shaft o Sebaceous (oil) glands o Sudoriferous (sweat) glands o Pacinian corpuscle o Meissner’s corpuscle

2. Do following activities on the distribution and function of Cutaneous Receptors   

Do Activity 4 Determining the Two-point threshold(done) Do Activity 2 Activity 6 Demonstration of Adaptation of Touch Receptors (done)

3. Explain about the distribution and function of sweat glands and sebaceous glands Sweat glands- exocrine glands are widely distributed in the skin. Sebaceous glands are found nearly all the skin except for the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet. Their ducts usually empty into a hair follicle, but some open directly onto the skin surface.

4. Identify the major regions of nails Sketch the parts of a nail and label it (figure 6.4a) textbook

5. Identify skin structures on thick and thin skin and answer questions with pictures

Thick Skin: Compare with Figure 6.1b in your lab manual (pg 58) and with the slide on demonstration. Can you identify the multiple layers of the skin? yes Which layer on Fig 6.1b is missing from this supplied image? Stratum lucidun What is the primary tissue type in the Dermis? Pupillary dermis What is the primary tissue type in the Epidermis? corneum What is the function of the thickening to the Epidermis? More protection In thick skin, what do the Dermal Papilla produce? fingerprints In what section of the Dermis can you find Dermal Papilla? Pupillary dermis

epi dermis

sud

epi – epidermis Hf – hair follicle

Seb – sebaceous gland

Sud – sudoriferous (sweat) gland Hypo – hypodermis

Thin skin: Compare with Figure 6.3 in your lab manual (pg 63) and with the slide on demonstration. How does this stratified squamous epithelium differ from the one observed in lab exercise 5? Hair folicle What appears to be happening to the very top layer of the epidermis? Hairs coming out Why are the sebaceous glands found right next to the hair follicles? Keep hair moisturized How do the sudoriferous glands contribute to the function of the skin? Nutrients cool off Where is the hair shaft in the above image or the demonstration slide? Is most of your body covered by thick or thin skin? thin...
