DJT1: Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography Name: Maleigh Lough Student ID#:001374200

Thesis Statement: Homeschooling is a great alternative for a child receiving a full education because it allows for more flexibility, allows the child to move quickly through their schooling, and allows the parent or guardian to meet the needs of the child. Annotated Bibliography: -Van Stryland, C. (2017, October 13). Flexibility: A Key to Homeschool Success. Calvert Education. https://www.calverteducation.com/general/take-advantage-homeschoolflexibility

This article states that some families are able to take a week off from school to visit their families and bond with them then as soon as they are home, they start their work back up again. This article states that “when students are rushed to complete their school work in a short amount of time, the added anxiety can negatively affect their performance” (Stryland 2017). This is stating that when students are put on a lot of pressure, they tend to become overwhelmed and that leads to shutting down. When they are

homeschooled though, whoever is teaching them can modify their schedule in a way that allows them to get their work done without feeling like they have no time. Also, when the student is sick, it allows the teacher to modify their lessons in a way that they are still able to learn without a huge work load.

-Van Stryland, C. (2017b, November 10). Homeschooling Pros and Cons. Calvert Education. https://www.calverteducation.com/should-i-homeschool/homeschooling-pros-and-cons

This article states that one of the biggest benefits of homeschooling is allowing the teacher to take all the time they need to make sure their student has retained all the required material in a subject. They are able to move at a faster pace because the teacher doesn’t have to address every student in a classroom who all have different learning styles. It also allows the teacher to teach about getting outside of the classroom and learning about the real world.

-Faulconer, J. (2018, July 2). Homeschooling: The Power of Now. TheHomeSchoolMom. https://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/homeschooling-the-power-of-now/

This article states that homeschooling allows you to prioritize what your child needs. Whether it be for mental or physical health, more time to enjoy the outdoors, or just what they need to learn. It can be beneficial for figuring out what you child needs now instead of thinking about college or the future. It can also be helpful for providing them with

things to learn about what is relevant to them right now. Mental health can also be prioritized when being homeschooled.

-Homeschooling could be the smartest way to teach kids in the 21st century — here are 5 reasons why. (2018, January 21). Business Insider. https://www.businessinsider.com/reasons-homeschooling-is-the-smartest-way-to-teachkids-today-2018-1?international=true&r=US&IR=T#personalized-learning-is-a-strongmethod-of-instruction-1

Personalized learning is what homeschooled is referred to as because it allows the students to learn in a way that is personalized to them and best fit their needs to learn better. Parents know their kids, so it can be easy for them to best fit their needs as teacher. It also allows them to not be around a toxic school environment and allows them to be in a place where they feel safe enough to get the best education.

-Winter, B. M. (2019, February 8). Homeschooling Is the Fastest Growing Segment in Education. Study Skills by SOAR Learning. https://studyskills.com/parents/homeschoolfastest-growing/

Parents want what is best for their child and they understand what their child needs in order to grow in their education. When parents know what their child needs in order to progress in their learning, they can also figure out what skills their child lacks and can

focus on that. When a parent sees what public schools lack, they can teach their child those skills instead to make sure they retain all of the needed information.

-familyeducation.com. (2020, May 29). Why Do People Homeschool? FamilyEducation. https://www.familyeducation.com/school/benefits-homeschooling/why-do-peoplehomeschool

This article also states how homeschooling is tailored to best fit a child’s abilities. It states how if a child is struggling in a subject, more resources can be brought in to make that subject stronger. It also can be tailored to best fit different learning styles. It a regular public-school setting, it can be hard to best fit everyone’s different learning styles. When you’re homeschooled, it is easier to fit learning styles. If a child is a visual learner, it is much easier to incorporate visual elements while teaching.

It is easier to know what your child is learning if you teach them yourself. This family is particular taught all 5 of their children and were progressing faster than children in public school. They look for their children’s personal interests instead of teaching them things they don’t need to know. They also find what their children’s passions are and teach based off of that.

-Locke, R. (2015, August 3). 10 Benefits of Homeschooling You Need to Know. Lifehack. https://www.lifehack.org/articles/lifestyle/10-benefits-homeschooling-you-needknow.html

Homeschooled children are in an environment that is flexible for them. They can enjoy breaks with their families and not have to feel like they are rushed to get their assignments done. It also is easier to make learning at their own pace and not have to feel the pressure of what they would feel in a public-school setting. Lastly, their needs are prioritized to best fit them and what would best help them in furthering their education.
