The Federalist Papers The Federalist Papers were a series of essays that were published in a book, The Federalist, in 1788. The idea was strongly pursued by Alexander Hamilton, with co-authors John Jay and James Madison. The purpose of these essays was to encourage the ratification of the United States Constitution. In order for the Constitution to obtain official ratification, it had to be approved by at least nine out of the thirteen states. The Constitution introduced a new form of government that was created after the Articles of Confederation. When it came to its ratification, disputes broke out among the states regarding what should be considered constitutional. Certain values were questioned. Additionally, people feared that their individual rights would disappear if a strong central government lessened the power of the states. The three essayists, Hamilton, Jay, and Madison, argued that the Constitution was the only way to preserve the Union, which was in danger of diminishing. They also explained that a federal government would act on behalf of the country’s national interest, fairly regulated by a system of checks and balances. These essayists signed their essays as “Publius” in attempt to keep their opinions hidden. Overall, the Federalist Papers were regarded by the states with great respect, believing they gave the United States a solid foundation. These papers had a huge effect on individual states as well, influencing their opinion on ratification, especially New York....
