Manifest and Mexican American War Vocab Santa Fe Trail- The 900 mile trail opened by American merchants for trading purposes following Mexico’s liberalization of the formerly restrictive trading policies in Spain. Oregon Trail- Overland trail of more than two thousand miles that carried American settlers from the midwest to new settlements in Oregon, Cali, and Utah. Stephen F. Austin- known as the father of Texas, led the second and ultimately successful colonization of the region by bringing 300 families from the United States. Sam Houston- United States politician and military leader who fought to gain independence for Texas and Mexico and to make it a part of the United States (1793-1863). Lone Star Republic- In September 1836, Texans raised a flag with a single star. The nickname of Texas was called the Lone Star Republic and it was named and independent nation. Sam Houston was elected president of the Lone Star Republic. Donner Party- Pioneer settlers traveling to California in wagon train. Snowbound winter 1846-1847 in Sierra Nevada mountains.
