Summary of how the Panama was constructed and the involvement of the United States....

Description

Original Canal: In 1887 a U.S regiment was sent to Nicaragua to survey the land for a possible a canal. In 1889 the Maritime Canal Company had a choice between Nicaragua or Panama and they decided to build a canal in Nicaragua. Construction began, however, it was stopped because of the Panic of 1893. The French were trying to find someone to sell the right to build the Panama Canal and their equipment. Stockholders of The French Company believed that the U.S were the only ones capable of building a canal in Panama due to their resources. William Cromwell and Lieutenant Philippe Bunau- Varilla tried to persuade the U.S to choose Panama over Nicaragua, but we still wanted Nicaragua. The U.S. sent a Canal Commission to investigate land for a canal and the commission chose Nicaragua. Also, it was much cheaper. To level the playing field, these two stockholders persuaded The French Company to lower their price to 40 million dollars from 100 million dollars which was equivalent to Nicaragua’s price. However, the Colombian government turned down the treaty, which resulted in the Panama Rebellion. Theodore Roosevelt decided that a rebellion is needed for the U.S. to gain control of the Panama Canal. Bunau- Varilla helped organize the rebellion. The U.S ship Nashville was sent to Panama to protect Americans living there, but it also blocked the Colombian military coming into Panama. It was hard for the Colombians to enter Panama because of jungle and the U.S battleship. Panama separated from Colombia after the rebellion

and a treaty was drafted between the U.S and Panama for the 10 mile land needed for the canal. It was ratified in Panama in 1903 and the U.S in 1904. The Hay- Bunau- Varilla Treaty gave Panama 10 million dollars and later on 250,000 dollars annually. In 1914 construction ended....
