Description

Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria 5.- What other places did he visit, study and publish about? Archduke Luis Salvador of Habsburg-Lorena y Borbón was born in Florence in 1847, and died in Bohemia, 12 October 1915. At the age of 20, he began voyages of exploration around the world with his ships Nixe I and Nixe II. When he was 14 the Archduke made his first travel, which was not an exploration one, to Venice, where he will come some years after to live there.

In 1867, after being some months preparing his “summer holidays” in Dalmatia, he finally went to Spain due to the political situation; he was recommended not to visit Dalmatia. He passed through Biarritz (Irún) ,Zaragoza , Barcelona and Valencia. After that, he arrived to Ibiza, where he stayed for some days after going to Mallorca, where he travelled under the title of Count of Neuendorf. The archduke fell in love with the island and its wonderful landscapes, making it his home. He was the first great researcher of the Balearic’s fauna , flora and geography. Mallorca and Ibiza were not the only Balearic Islands he visited, he also travelled to Menorca. Between 1870-91 he published a book about these islands: “The Balearic The Balearic Islands described in words and Islands described in words and pictures. Large edition in 7 Volumes pictures). Large edition in 7 Volumes and 9 books and 9 books”.

In 1868 he visited Italy and the Liparian islands. The Archduke published a book about this archipelago: The Liaprian Islans (1893-96). In 1871, when he arrived to Palma, he had already visited other Spanish cities such as Alicante and Elche. The Archduke’s works have been divided in three sectors; of the Mediterranean, the western, the eastern and the central. Apart from the places mentioned previously, in the Mediterranean, he also visited Tunisia, place that he visited at the age of 23 and about which he published a book called TUNISIA. AN IMAGE of North African life (1870); Cyprus (he described the capital of this place in the book Levkosia, capital of Cyprus. Dalmatia, the Gulf of Corinth (in 1876 he published a book called A Walking Travel in the Gulf of Corinth), Abazia, Egypt (related to this place the Archduke published The caravan route from Egypt to Syria (The Caravan Route from Egypt to Syria) and Ramleh as a winter resort), Siria ( Panorama of Alexandrette, 1901), the Ionic Islands, the Kameni Islands (Some Words about the Kameni Islands, 1875) among others.

However, he does not only visited places closer to the Mediterranean, thanks to his geographic publications it is known that the Archduke made a “round-the-world” trip, from the 1st January to the 19th May of 1881. For instance he visited Los Angeles, city which he described in the book A Flower from the Golden Land or Los Angeles (1878 and 1885). He also published a book about the small German island of Helgoland, which the Archduke visited in his youth: Helgoland, a traveller's tale,1890 and 1901 (2nd edition). In only two weeks he wrote a remarkable work about Hobarttown, the capital of the island of Tasmania in Australia (Hobarttown, the Capital of Tasmania, 18886).

In conclusion, thanks to all this, the archduke is considered the precursor of tourism in the Balearic Islands, and his work as a geographer is still remembered today. !
