KPOP and OPM: The Popular Music Genres

The world has changed over time. Society has evolved as a result of the changes. Individuals have been compelled to make a decision about whether or not they want to be a member of modern society as a result of this transformation. If they desire to become a contemporary person in society, they are attempting to adapt into a changing world, keeping up with others

and

new

developments.

In

the

age

of

YouTube

and

Spotify, K-pop (Korean pop music) as well as OPM (Original Pinoy Music) have become a phenomenon that plays a remarkable role

in

the

country’s

growing

economy.

As

this

influence

continues to prevail, the biggest question remains “Has Korean Pop

(Kpop)

been

slowly

killing

the

Original

Pinoy

Music

(OPM)”? To answer the question, KPOP is not killing OPM as these two make a different impact to people.

Every

music

genre

has

its

own

beauty

and

it

has

a

different purpose to touch the life of its audience. Kpop and OPM are two different genres in music that offer audiences a variety of entertainment. Undeniably, these genres are booming greatly

in

the

industry

because

they

excel

in

different

aspects and it has modified characteristics. K-pop tends to have a higher beating and speed, which indicates that it is more likely to make listeners happy. OPM, on the other hand, is

sweet

fondness

and for

melodic, “hugot”

which

tunes.

is

understandable

While

OPM

music

given has

a

our more

acoustic feel, K-pop is faster, louder, and more intense, the difference does not appear to discourage Filipinos from liking both genres in different ways. In the Philippines, K-pop music

is immensely popular. It has covered the country's mainstream media

to

the

point

where

even

local

radio

stations

have

adapted to the K-pop craze. From pop and lively tracks to ballads, Korean music of all genres can be heard everywhere too. The rise of social media helps elevated K-pop to new levels and served as a major catalyst for the genre's global expansion. Subsequently, with this rising career of KPOP, data shows

that

growing

in

the

Original

popularity,

Pinoy

Music

on

Spotify as of January 1, 2019. OPM is making its way far beyond the Philippines. The popularity of OPM in the United States

and

other

parts

of

the

world

have

shown

that

the

Philippines has a one-stop shop for best music from the past, present, and future. OPM have showed that world the talents of every Fipino music artist who had poured out their sould in making music for people.

Indeed, the Philippines is a music-loving country, both OPM

and

KPOP

play

a

big

part

in

fueling

that

enthusiasm.

Liking a music genre that is not our own is not a crime, but forgetting what’s ours, specifically OPM, is not a good thing either. Every music is an art that comes from an artist that needs to be appreciated, whether it’s OPM or Kpop. Thus, Kpop is not slowly killing OPM as these two shine differently in their own ways and are perceived differently by its audiences....
