Leader Competencies Spc, Smiley, Quashawn

As a leader, knowledge of Army Leadership Competencies is essential. “Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind — accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my soldiers” (NCO creed). Competencies are classified into three types: lead, develop, and achieve. Leaders of the Army are dedicated to leading others, while developing not only the atmosphere but individuals and the entire organization to achieve operational objectives. Competencies provide Army leaders with a straightforward and reliable means of communicating goals. Therefore, it is important to incorporate these skills into every Army soldier. First and foremost, effective leadership does not come naturally. Anyone can be given a leadership position, but one has to acquire the skills it takes to lead within the Army. According to ADP 6-22 leadership is built on several key components. A leader has to be able to guide others by maintaining high standards and finding balance between tasks and soldiers’ well-being. Communication plays a role in guidance as well by actively listening, setting goals for actions, and ensuring everyone are on the same page. These behaviors would enable you to gain loyalty from soldiers and maintain influence on others in your chain of command. This gives a leader the assurance he or she needs to lead with confidence. To become a leader, you have to get out your comfort zone. One of my favorite quotes says, “You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone; change begins at the end of your comfort zone”. When you become a leader you cannot continue to do the things you were doing as a lower enlisted soldier. Leaders lead from the front, leaders are committed and driven in every leader should be looking to develop.

Second, leadership encompasses development. “The cohesion that matters on the battlefield is that which is developed at the company, platoon, and squad level”, GEN Edward Meyer. Building teamwork and solidarity, encouraging action, and demonstrating care for others are all part of building a safe atmosphere for soldiers. One can make a huge difference in a soldiers’ experience by being a teacher. However, in order to improve others, a leader must never stop developing himself. Prepare for anticipated and unforeseen obstacles, broaden your skills, and keep your selfawareness up to date. According to introduction of leadership Section 5, Counseling is a great way to develop your soldiers. Do not just counsel them on negative behavior but positive actions as well. As well as developing soldiers, a leader can help develop his unit and the army as a whole. We are all one team and we should want our unit to stand out. Making sure soldiers are trained and up to date, making sure the bays are always squared away, and making sure the other leaders are doing the thing they need to be doing. You will make a difference whether you are a team leader or a unit commander. Leadership is at the core of everything. Focus on bettering yourself and your unit will still represent you. When you develop it makes achieving all goals possible. Lastly, leadership and development would yield achievement within the unit. Trust and good communication are the product of good leadership. This makes it possible to collaborate on tasks and missions, resulting in a strong task completion rate. The army's ultimate objective is to accomplish operations in a strategic and successful manner. Why should a leader do so if he or she is incapable of doing so? No matter what challenges arise, the will to achieve the objective must be unstoppable. The mission must be finished. To lead the team through these difficult tasks, you must

understand how to approach scenarios. Once you are given the task or mission you need as a leader should be ready to get the job done. The unit should be encouraged to persevere by the leader's drive to complete the task. All and All, according to ADP 6-22, three main components are needed to carry out army leadership competencies. Leading, developing, and achieving are these skills. These elements can be reached in a variety of ways, which can aid a leader in improving his soldiers, himself and the unit. To establish a high-standard leadership aspect of the military, these tactics should be adopted. Every leader no matter if they have been a leader for years or just becoming one should look at the 3 components and ask, “Am I leading my soldiers the correct way, Am I developing everyone around me for the greater good of my unit, and lastly am I getting the job done”. This allows them to progressives a leader in progress all the soldiers around them.
