Management and leadership Leadership definition! = A process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.! There are two types of leaders:! - The formal leader (legal leader) derives his influence from his authority within a hierarchical structure! - The informal leader (emergent leader) derives his influence from his personal qualities recognized by others, irrespective of his hierarchical position! Example of behavioral theories ! University of Iowa studies (Kurt Lewin)! Identified three leadership styles:! - Autocratic/ Authoritarian style: centralized authority, low participation, absolute control, make all the decisions! - Democratic/ Participatory style: involvement, high participation, feedback, express ideas, decentralized decision-making! - Laissez faire/ Delegate style: hands-off management, providing tools and resources but limited guidance! In general, people prefer the second style (Democratic/ Participatory)! Contingency approaches! «#Leaders do not exist in a vacuum#»! Effective leadership is much more complex than isolating a few traits or behaviors: a certain leadership style may be appropriate in certain conditions but not in others.! Situational leadership (Kenneth Blanchard)! If people don’t want do work or can’t work, you must adopt the directive style.! If people want to but can’t you must adopt the informative style.! If they can but don’t want to work your way anymore you must adopt the participative style.! If they can and they want it’s the delegate style.! In Margin call John Told is a directive leader. Sam is a delegating manager.!
