Readings: True to the Faith (pp. 3-4, 101-102, 124-128), Priesthood (Encyclopedia of Mormonism) Assignment: Describe, explain or define as best you can the following priesthood terms. 1. Priesthood: The priesthood is the power and authority to act in the name of God for the salvation of humankind. Male members of the church who meet standards of worthy behavior and church participation are generally ordained to specific offices within the priesthood. 2. Restoration of the Priesthood: Jesus Christ restored the gospel to the earth through the Prophet Joseph Smith. This Restoration included the restoration of priesthood power and authority. With the restoration of this authority again on the earth, the Church of Jesus Christ was restored in its fulness. 3. Priesthood Authority: Authority given to the worthy males to act in the name of God and give blessings. 4. Priesthood Power: You must be worthy in order to receive and exercise priesthood power. “the rights of the priesthood are inseparably connected with the powers of heaven, and that the powers of heaven cannot be controlled nor handled only upon the principles of righteousness” (D&C 121:36). 5. Order(s) of the Priesthood: Some of the orders of the Priesthood are to preach the gospel, administer the ordinances of salvation, and govern the kingdom of God on the earth. 6. Priesthood Offices & Priesthood Quorums: A priesthood office is a department assigning different callings to the members of the priesthood. A priesthood quorum is an organized group of brethren who hold the same priesthood office. The primary purposes of quorums are to serve others, build unity and brotherhood, and instruct one another in doctrines, principles, and duties. 7. Priesthood Keys: The exercise of priesthood authority in the Church is governed by those who hold priesthood keys (see D&C 65:2; 124:123). Those who hold priesthood keys have the right to preside over and direct the Church within a jurisdiction. For example, a bishop holds priesthood keys that enable him to preside in his ward. Therefore, when a child in that ward is prepared to be baptized, the person baptizing the child must receive authorization from the bishop. 8. Priesthood Ordinances: Priesthood is a lifelong responsibility and with the ordinance comes the promise that the Lord will qualify you to do His work according to your faithfulness. 9. Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood: We receive the holy priesthood by an “oath and covenant.” This means that Heavenly Father gives us His oath (guarantee) that we can have the power and blessings of the priesthood if we covenant (promise) with Him to do certain things. “Therefore, all those who receive the priesthood, receive this oath and covenant of [the] Father, which he cannot break, neither can it be moved” (D&C 84:40). 10. Priesthood Callings & Duties: The duties and responsibilities given to the members holding priesthood authorities are called Priesthood calling and duties.
