Description

The Life and contributions of John XXIII to Catholicism The contributions of John XXIII are a major turning point in Catholicism as a whole.

John XXIII became the Pope of the catholic church from 1958 - 1963 after the death of Pius XII his predecessor. John XXIII was born in Sotto il Monte, Italy on the 25th of November 1881. Before he was made Pope, he went by the name Angello Giuseppe Roncalli and was born to the poor couple Giovanni

Battista Roncalli and Marianna Giulia (Mazzola) Roncalli. He later joined the military, became a lieutenant and then a military chaplain and was later in January 1953, a Cardinal. He not only did this, but he also taught and emphasized on peace and Christian unity on which he wrote a notable encyclical on with topic, “Pacem in terris” meaning peace on earth. He wrote another encyclical called “Mater et Magistra” meaning mother and teacher which was issued on May 16, 1961. In March 1963, he revised the Canon Law and set-up a commission of Cardinals. Another fascinating thing he did was summoning the first ecumenical cycle in a century, barely three months in office. During his reign as pope, he was so diverse in the sense that he met with other denomination leaders like the bishop of Canterbury, Eastern Orthodox Leaders and Protestant leaders, promoting peace and unity. Pope John xxiii also played a huge role in the Cuban missile crisis which gave him John XXIII later died at the age of eighty-one on the 3rd of June 1963 and was succeeded by Paul VI. After his death, he was officially declared Saint on the 27th of April 2014 and today, so many churches are named after him like the St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church here in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With all these accomplishments listed we can all agree that the life and role of Pope John XXIII is of great essence to Catholicism....
