Expected Pharmacological Action alters the effects of serotonin in the CNS

Therapeutic Use Antidepressant action, which may develop only after several weeks.

Complications SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, drowsiness, confusion, hypotension, drymouth, blurred vision, tinnitus. tremors. hematuria, erectile dysfunction

Medication Administration PO- with or immediately after meals to minimize side effects

Contraindications/Precautions serious potentially fatal reaction may occur with MAO inhibitors, should be stopped at least 14 days prior to trazodone therapy increase risk of bleeding with NSAIDS< aspirin, clopidogrel, or warfarin increased risk of serotinergic side effects with St John's wort and SAMe

Interactions May cause hypertension, seizures, and death when used with MAO inhibitors; do not use within 14 days of MAO inhibitor therapy

Nursing Interventions Assess BP and pulse rate Assess mental status, especially during beginning therapy and changing dose assess for possible sexual dysfunction
