Related Content Pain has four catagories: Duration: Acute- limited in time, has a direct cause and resolves. Chronic-ongoing, repetetive and lasts more than 6 months. Does not alter vital signs and can cause or be caused by depression and fatigue. Origin Nociceptive- localized throbbing pain usually from inflammed or damaged tissue. Neuropathic- comes from damaged pain nerves characterised as shooting and burning.

Underlying Principles The managment of pain and understanding its quality is essensial in patient care. It is known to cuase better patient outcomes. Its the job of the nurse to help a pt with pain managment. This can be with both pharmacological and nonpharmacological resources. The first step in pain managment is determining the patients pain level quality and source of pain.

Nursing Interventions -Schedual pain mangment around the clock when needed - based on the clients pain and doctors orders decide on what kind and how much prescripted pain medication should be administered - administer analgesic medications before the pain is severe - educate the pt on pain managment and use of pain medication -introduce a pain managment plan with both pharmacological and nonpharmacological pain relief - Use a 0-10 pain scale for a pt to rate their pain - Ask the OPQRST of pain; onset, Provokes, quality, radiation, severity, time - to assess pts pain
