PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Suppresses inflammation and the normal immune response. has numerous intense metabolic effects. Suppresses adrenal function at chronic doses of 4mg/day

Medication Administration This medication can be administered via P.O., IV, IM

Contraindications/Precautions contraindicated in active untreated infections, epidural use, known alcohol, bisulfite, cow’s milk, or tartrazine hypersensitivity, or intolerance. Administration of live virus vaccines, and lactation. Cautiously: chronic treatment, stress, potential infections may mask signs, systemic sclerosis.

Interactions

Nursing Interventions assess involved system before and periodically during therapy, assess for s/s adrenal insufficiency (hypotension, wt loss, weakness, confusion, lethargy) monitor weight, observe for steady weight gain, rales/crackles, or dyspnea.
