PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Binds to bacterial cell wall membrane, causing cell death
Therapeutic Use for treatment of skin infections, bone and joint infections, UTIs, respiratory tract infections, intra-abdominal infections andsepticemia.
Complications encephalopathy, seizures, aphasia, HA, C. Diff, rash, pruritus, bleeding, hemolytic anemia.
Medication Administration IV: 1-2 g Q12 IM: 0.5-1 g Q12
Contraindications/Precautions Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to penicillins. Use cautiously in renal impairment GI disease, hepatic dysfunction, pregnancy, geriatric patients.
Nursing Interventions Assess patient for infection, Obtain specimens for culture and sensitivity before initiating therapy, monitor for s/s of anaphylaxis, monitor bowel function.
Interactions Probenecid, loop diuretics, or aminoglycosides
