Description

BIO1022 Lab 2: Animal Diversity Analysis Task

Instructions: The aim of this lab is to consolidate, connect, and expand the knowledge you gained in Weeks 3 (Plan an Animal), 4 (Move the Animal) and 5 (Feed the Animal). This lab will use animal specimens to illustrate and compare morphological features. After you have completed your Lab 2 session and your Lab 2 Worksheet, you are required to analyse and consolidate the concepts that have been addressed in this lab by answering the questions below. This is an individual assignment prepared by you. Any submitted work (in part or whole) that violates the Monash University policies on plagiarism will be subject to strict penalty. Markers will report all instances where they suspect plagiarism/collusion. Please refer to Moodle for the due date and time for this task. Please write your answers in the spaces provided below and save it as a Word document (.doc/.docx) and upload to the submission dropbox on Moodle. No other file formats will be accepted. You should not include your name anywhere in your submission. Late submissions are not accepted for this assessment task unless under grounds of special consideration. Word limits within questions must be strictly adhered to. Any words over the maximum will not be considered as part of your answer.

Question 1 Below is an illustration of a hypothetical animal. Based on your knowledge of animal diversity, classify the animal and outline the characters that you have used to justify your answer. Your answer should: ● Classify the animal to phylum level and outline the characters that you have used to justify your answer. ● Hypothesise the likely habitat for this animal (aquatic or terrestrial) based on its body plan/features. ● Using the knowledge gained from your lab and some additional online research, outline the most likely diet for this organism. In your justification you must refer to the morphology of the feeding structures present. (150 words - 8 marks)

Answer:

Question 2 Imagine a hypothetical planet, called Biopa2. The environment on Biopa2 is much different to that on Earth, but still presents the opportunity to support life. Key features of Biopa2’s environment include: ● ● ● ●

An atmosphere that contains higher levels of oxygen than Earth does today. Biopa2’s surface receives approximately the same amount of sunlight per day as Earth. There is no land or fresh water bodies on Biopa2, only saltwater. This habitat is rich in life and there are numerous types of small photosynthetic animals (1 cm - 10 cm).

You are part of a team of scientists tasked with the design of a triploblastic, coelomate animal that contains features and systems based on those found on Earth*. The resultant animal should be ‘designed’ as a fast and mobile organism so it can successfully colonise the largest ecosystem in Biopa2. *The organisms can be a novel arrangement of these systems found on Earth, they don’t need to mimic a particular animal. In no more than 350 words, describe the minimal animal structures and systems that would be required for this animal to prosper in the harsh Biopa2 conditions and justify their inclusion in the list. Your answer should address each of the following: ● ● ● ● ●

Skeleton and Movement Respiration Circulation Feeding and diet adaptations Reproduction

Justify the inclusion of these features or systems by relating them to the Biopan conditions outlined above where appropriate. In addition to the knowledge gained in the lab, it is a good idea to review the content from weeks 3-5 to help answer this question. (350 words - 14 marks) Answer:...
