Task 5 answers: A hazard is something that can cause harm, e.g. electricity, chemicals, working up a ladder, noise, a lose cord on a floor, stress, etc. A risk is the chance, high or low, that any hazard will actually cause somebody harm.

Task 6 answers: To keep a healthy and safe work environment, identifying hazards and assessing the risk is a priority. The process of identifying hazards is to find out what could cause harm. Identifying hazards in the workplace involves finding things and situations that could potentially cause harm to people. Hazards generally arise from the following aspects of work and their interaction: physical work environment equipment, materials, and substances used work tasks and how they are performed, and work design and management.

The process of risk assessment control involves considering what could happen if someone is exposed to a hazard and the likelihood of it happening. A risk assessment can help you, as a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU), to determine: how severe a risk is whether any existing control measures are effective what action you should take to control the risk, and how urgently the action needs to be taken.

Task 7 answers: •

Responsibilities with regards to the health and safety of employees in the workplace for self, fellow workers and visitors to the workplace is to ensure a 'duty of care' is upheld. Must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by what they do. You must follow any reasonable health and safety instructions from your employer. It is important that you: o work safely o follow instructions o ask if you are not sure how to safely perform the work o use personal protective equipment (PPE) in the way you were trained and instructed to use it o report injuries and unsafe and unhealthy situations to your supervisor or to your health and safety representative (HSR).

A PCBU has the primary duty of care to ensure the health and safety of workers while they are at work in the business or undertaking. A PCBU is also responsible for ensuring work carried out does not carry risk to the health and safety of others.

Ensure the First Aid Officers have access to first aid kits and they are close to areas where there is a higher risk of injury or illness, as well as inside work vehicles if workers are expected to travel as part of their job. The contents of first aid kits should be based on the first aid risk assessment. At a minimum, they should include equipment for providing basic first aid. A trained first aider should hold a nationally recognised statement of attainment from a registered training organisation. Some workplaces may require more specific or advanced first aid training depending on the nature of the work or the workplace. First aiders should attend training regularly so their knowledge and skills are up-to-date.

Task 8 answers:

Warning Signs – When the hazard or hazardous conditions aren’t life-threatening, a Warning Sign lets you know you could still get hurt. These are easy to identify with their yellow background and black triangle around the hazard symbol. SLIPPERY WHEN WET is a commonly recognisable Warning Sign.

Danger Signs – If you need to warn people about potentially life-threatening hazards or hazardous conditions, you need to use a Danger Sign. The familiar red oval inside a black rectangle with the word DANGER in bold, capital letters, alerts people to the threat. Common Danger Signs include HIGH VOLTAGE and DO NOT ENTER.

Fire safety signs advise the location of fire alarms and firefighting equipment. They contain white symbols and/or text on a red background.

A brief overview of how the accident occurred: On Monday 13/05/2020, at approximately 10.30am whilst walking through the main office on my way to the photocopy machine I tripped over the bottom draw of a filing cabinet that was left open by someone in the office. My head hit the corner of the table when I fell, I also cut my right leg on the corner of the drawer. The injury required 2 stitches and resulted in a slight bruise to my head.

A description of the injury: My right leg had a minor cut that required 2 stitches and at the front right-hand side, just above my eyebrow I sustained a bruise with a slight lump.

How long you were away from work? I was away from work for 1 day, including the remainder of the day the accident happened.

Suggest at least two actions that you consider will prevent the accident occurring to another employee: o

Ensure all workspaces are kept clutter free and that all employees are advised to ensure that all cupboard draws, filing cabinet draws must be closed directly after use.

o

Put a small sticker like sign on cabinet draws, filing draws estating – Close after use
