Description

Business Dalyell Program Lead. Create. Disrupt.

About the Dalyell Program The Dalyell program is a university-wide initiative for high-achieving students. At the Business School, the program aims to nurture future leaders ready to create innovative solutions to disrupt the world for good. The program is named after Elsie Jean Dalyell, OBE (1881-1948), who was a distinguished graduate of the University of Sydney. She was the first woman appointed as a full-time member of staff at the Sydney Medical School. Her academic excellence, commitment to service, and passion for charting her own unique path are hallmarks of the Dalyell program.

Business Dalyell Progression Support Plan your degree

Uni is an adventure! Making the most of your Business Dalyell uni experience requires planning out your degree carefully.

Some Technical Terms A Bachelor’s degree is an undergraduate qualification certifying that you have gained a particular set of knowledge and skills associated with a specific area of expertise (for example, Commerce). The university awards you these qualifications after you complete all study requirements. A Unit of Study is a subject that you undertake towards your degree. It is the building block of all degrees. In a regular semester, one unit of study is typically delivered over 13 weeks. In each week, you typically attend one 2-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial, for a total of 3 face-to-face hours per week. Credit points represent the typical workload of a unit of study. You can think of one credit point as equivalent roughly to one hour of study per week. One Unit of Study is typically equivalent to 6 credit points. This means that you can expect to devote roughly 6 hours of study per week on a Unit of Study. An Open Learning Environment (OLE) unit is a special unit of study that is delivered predominantly online. OLEs can be equivalent to 0, 2 or 6 credit points, and you can choose from a wide variety of topics here.

Principles of Degree Planning Principle 1. Follow the handbook of the year you commenced your current degree. Find your handbook here. Principle 2. You cannot exceed the credit point limit of your degree. • A Bachelor of Commerce requires you to complete 144 credit points • A Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Coursework or Honours) requires you to complete 48 credit points in the fourth year of your degree (after completing your Bachelor of Commerce) • Combined Engineering/Commerce degrees require you to complete 96 Commerce credit points

Principle 3. Prioritise degree requirements and leave electives for later where possible. Principle 4. Units of study can only double-count towards multiple components if they are a core requirement for both components. Principle 5. Review your plan regularly.

Planning Your Degree

Planning your degree is like thinking about the awesome stuff that you’re going to put into your backpack. Your backpack has limited space, so you need to pack carefully! Use our template (next page) to plan your degree. You can refer to some example degree plans here. Best practice dictates that you should plan to do the following in order of priority: 1. Do the core units first a. Commerce core – 4 units of study x 6 credit points = 24 credit points 2. And then do the required units for your major/s or subject areas a. Major 1 – 8 units of study x 6 credit points = 48 credit points b. Major 2 – 8 units of study x 6 credit points = 48 credit points 3. After doing your core and major units, plan for your Dalyell units a. Dalyell – 2 units of study x 6 credit points = 12 credit points 4. And then do your OLEs a. OLE – 1 unit x 6 credit points = 6 credit points OR b. OLE – 3 units of study x 2 credit points = 6 credit points 5. Other electives If you’re aiming to go on semester exchange, you need to make sure that you have four elective units free for that.

Business Dalyell Units of Study Innovation changes the world. But innovation can only truly make a difference when it is creative, practical and sustainable. Through the Business Dalyell units, you will go on a journey of creating innovative ideas in teams and organisations and transforming these into practical, sustainable solutions to address complex problems and the world’s grand challenges.

BUDL2901, 2902 and 3901 are offered back-to-back in the January/February intensive period. You should thus be able to complete 12 Dalyell credit points over the Summer if you wanted to. BUDL3902 has 3 intensive Saturday classes in the Semester with a 2-week intensive overseas trip in either June/July or December (as relevant, assuming travel restrictions are lifted). You have an opportunity to use your Global Mobility Scholarship towards this unit if you wanted to.

Understand the CSAM Your progression in Dalyell is monitored in multiples of 48 credit points (or 8 units of study, which usually takes 2 semesters of full-time study). Upon completing 48 credit points, your Cross-Semester Average Mark (CSAM) is calculated and used to do a progression check. To remain in the program, your CSAM must be at least 75. If you’ve completed less than 48 credit points (for example, if you’ve only been in Dalyell for one semester), then you are not yet eligible for a progression check. You remain in the program until you complete the required 48 credit points. After completing your first progression check, your CSAM effectively ‘resets’ and you need to complete another unique set of 48 credit points before undergoing another progression check. It’s important to note that CSAM calculations don’t ‘overlap’ across semesters, and that the mark of a unit of study can only be used once to calculate a CSAM.

Here’s an example for a full-time Bachelor of Commerce student who joined Dalyell in Semester 1, 2020: • Year 1 CSAM = average of marks for units of study undertaken in Semester 1 and Semester 2, 2020 • Year 2 CSAM = average of marks for units of study undertaken in Semester 1 and Semester 2, 2021 • Year 3 CSAM = average of marks for units of study undertaken in Semester 1 and Semester 2, 2022 It will be different for a full-time student who joined Dalyell in Semester 2, 2020. In which case: • Year 1 CSAM = average of marks for units of study undertaken in Semester 2, 2020 and Semester 1, 2021 • Year 2 CSAM = average of marks for units of study undertaken in Semester 2, 2021 and Semester 1, 2022 • Year 3 CSAM = average of marks for units of study undertaken in Semester 2, 2022 and Semester 1, 2023 If you experience any difficulties or need advice at any stage in your degree, touch base with the BUSINESS DALYELL PROGRAM DIRECTOR.
