Description

Definition of Community and Population Health Rather than the health and well-being of an individual, community and population health prioritizes a particular group of people or the community at large. This involves improving the overall health outcomes in a community. This may be achieved by finding ways to decrease viral spread, identifying contaminated food and water sources, or addressing behaviors that can negatively impact health outcomes. Community health education is also extremely important to improved community health outcomes. Similar to individual health, public health can be assessed by interpreting trends in the community at large. Nursing roles in community and public health include vaccine administration, procuring and distributing healthcare supplies as well as surveying and educating impacted communities. Normally, my position in the operating room doesn’t focus too much on public health. The Covid-19 virus is a public health emergency that has effected every single nurse. We have had ensure the safety of our own communities as well as the health of our of healthcare workers. We have had to procure adequate PPE during shortages to prevent spread of Covid-19 among healthcare workers. Identifying trauma patients that are carriers of Covid-19 is another community and population health challenge that we have had to face. Another challenge we have to address is weighing what care can be delayed in order to test a patient for Covid-19, and what care cannot. Outside of work, my experience as a nurse during Covid-19 has lead me to educate those in my community about the mitigations that should be taken to prevent infection and minimize community spread. No matter what our specialty, community and public health effects every nurse, and the converse is also true.

Definition of Evidence-Based Practice Evidence-based practice is the foundation of how we care for our patients. Utilizing practices that have been studied and proven helps to continually improve outcomes for more and more patients. Helping to enhance evidence-based practices is also an important part of a nurses job. Data collection is one way a nurse helps improve evidence-based practice. An example of this can be as simple as collecting and recording vital signs. This data is used to recognize trends to determine courses of care as well as the efficacy of treatment. Collected data is also used to conduct scientific research that can help improve patient care and safety. Utilizing evidence-based practice includes recognizing that our norms of care are subject to change based on new and ever evolving data, as well as new treatments are developed. Embracing evidence-based practice is an essential part of nursing. In surgery, embracing evidence-based practice influences every part of patient care. One example of this includes changing the timing of preprocedural medication administration when new data shows decreased incidence of surgical infection with said new medication timing. This is only one example of a multitude of how evidence based practice has changed how we care for patients to improve surgical outcomes. Staying abreast to new standards of care comprised of evidence-based practice is an essential part of how I care for my patients in surgery.

Definition of Applied Leadership Applied leadership is essential to the success of any organization, including healthcare systems. In a well running healthcare system applied leadership can be evident throughout the organization including

leadership in nursing. Nurse leaders set examples, set expectations, and are a resource of support for their team. In addition, a keen nurse leader acknowledges imperfections and works with their team to improve them. Constantly evaluating and working to improve practices within their team is another important role in applied leadership. A good leader is not just a boss at work, but is accountable to their superiors, as well their team. Leadership in nursing is always patient-centered with excellent patient care being paramount. As a charge nurse in my department, I am always cognizant of my role within my team and how to best lead my team. Ultimately, the care of our patients is supreme, but how to best provide that care while working in a multifactorial environment is my job. How to allocate resources, being a resource for my team, and prioritizing patient care are all important factors of how I apply leadership in my occupation.
