Description

Alyssa Slapper C820- Task 3 Western Governors University September 19, 2020 Reflection Reflecting on this Leadership and Communication course, I have learned many new strategies and techniques that I will take with me throughout my career and personal life. Understanding the psychology and science behind our interpersonal communications, leadership styles, and task management skills, can be so helpful in growing mindfulness. The 5 Dynamics assignment was fascinating to me and it validated exactly what type of working style I thought I had. I scored effortless plus in both excite and execute. These two energies explain who I am in regards to tasks. As an excite I am very social, the life of the party. I enjoy fostering enthusiasm among the group. In my execute working style, I am a natural leader. I get things done ahead of time and like being responsible for tasks. If someone offers me a challenge, I work quickly to make it a reality. My strengths in these areas include punctuality, friendliness, positivity, and time management skills. However, my strengths can also cause problems amongst members of the team. People may see me as too bossy or too forward. People can find my energy and enthusiasm overwhelming. My lowest energy level, examine, is at a stress intensity level. This backfires often for me because sometimes I don’t pay close enough attention to detail and slow down to ensure accuracy in my tasks. I found the conversation meter extremely interesting. As a registered nurse, I engage in many different conversations with different types of people at work: patients, families, coworkers, and physicians. Analyzing the conversation meter has helped me to identify the level of conversation I am having and to help it move away from a cycle of waste. Often patients are in the level of pretense or sincerity in a conversation. Sometimes a patient may not be truthful about certain events to avoid

embarrassment, pretense. Or a patient may explain their problem coming from a place of emotion, rather than facts, as in sincerity. As a healthcare provider, I try to keep conversations in accuracy, factsbased. I also try and have authentic conversations with my patients allowing for an appropriate back and forth discussion where both parties feel valued and understood. My strategies for being a successful student are always changing in my life. I am a mother, a wife, a nurse, and now a student. I’ve been finding solutions that work best for me to be the best student I can be. I prioritize my school work and let my family know that some responsibilities will need to be theirs while I’m in school. I make an effort to work ahead as much as possible, as I cannot predict the future and what challenges I may face in my home or work life. I am learning to truly listen and apply the content I am learning to my life and nursing practice. Some of the challenges I am facing include fear of failure and lack of motivation. I am a proud person who wants to do the best in all of my work, the fear of failure is what held me back from beginning the RN-BSN program initially, and I can’t let it discourage me from facing challenging courses or tasks in school. My lack of motivation is troublesome as I am a busy person with a lot on my plate. It is difficult to give up what little free time I have to focus on school, but I am working at making my education and goals a priority every day. My overall experience in this course has been positive. I have truly learned strategies that I can carry with me in all of my future endeavors. Learning mindfulness techniques has helped me to reduce stress and anxiety in my busy life. I can apply the knowledge I have gained from this class in my professional career by understanding that everyone has different working-styles, personalities, and communication challenges. Understanding concepts such as the 5 Dynamics can assist me in group tasks at work and understanding the Conversation Meter can help to improve my interpersonal communication with everyone I encounter in my career. I also am working to apply these principles at home, with my husband and children. Conflict resolution and non-violent communication are concepts I

have been working to practice at home to be a more mindful wife and mother. I am learning to listen to my kids in a way I wasn’t before. I am practicing using what I have learned in this course to improve my relationships in and out of work....
