Description

Professional Communication & Leadership

1. Provide a brief overview of your understanding of your Energy Graph from the Learning Report, including two personal strengths and two personal challenges that relate to your working style. During the Leadership and Communication course, I was able to clearly see my five dynamics energy map. I have an unusual learning style allowing me to be able to integrate my quirks and be successful as a student at WGU. My two areas of strength include; explore and excite. I definitely am a creative person with flexible ideas and possibilities always floating around my mind for my next fun task or DIY project. Another strength is my enthusiasm for all occasions. I enjoy bringing joy to events and within my working environment. I’m bubbly and outgoing but tend to be a homebody and introvert in my daily life. My two areas of weaknesses include examine and execute, scoring deliberate in both. One of my weaknesses involve procrastination. I tend to dive into research and fact-finding if the topic interests me. When the topic becomes less interesting it may take more motivation to complete the tasks in an appropriate amount of time. I am an introvert and tend to steer myself away from crowds and groups. However, if I know the people in the crowd, I'm bubbly and outgoing. I tend to keep distance between myself and others for a longer time than needed. Unable to delegate tasks is another potential weakness I carry. I need to learn how to let go and work within a team and not rely solely on myself to accomplish all the tasks needed. 2. Describe your experience(s) of conversations as they relate to the laws of conversation and the four levels of the conversation meter. My experience with conversations is that we all have concerns and needs we are trying to communicate effectively to one another creating vulnerability at times. Non-Verbal Communication is labeled as waste on the four levels on the conversation meter. Non-Verbal

Communication is probably one of the more difficult types of conversations for me to have. I find myself feeling very vulnerable and uncomfortable with this style of communication. During this style of communication, you’re in the appease, freeze, and flight bioreactions and avoid difficult situations. For example: “I told my mother in law that by her not being present in our lives has really made us feel like you don’t want to be in our lives. Is there any way you can come down two times a year to help us close this gap?” This conversation would be looked at in the sincerity section of the conversation meter. The laws of conversations incorporate both a waste cycle and a value cycle. A waste cycle would be best described as being resisted in the conversation. For example, my husband and I had just had an argument and my friend sensed something was different about my tone of voice when we spoke. She offered me guidance and reassurance but I continued to resist her help by changing the subject and blowing her off. The value cycle is best described as creating a positive alignment. This cycle focuses on listening, calm body language, eye contact, and being interested in the conversation. For example, today at work I was learning about skin subs and yes lectures can be boring but I made eye contact, gave positive body language, and showed interest in the topic. The value cycle is helpful when you ask clarifying questions post-lecture or speech and remember the conversation. This is the cycle of communication to stay within. Conversations need to occur before getting to pretense and sincerity on the conversation meter. For us to stay within authentic and accurate stages of the conversation meter it is crucial to be upfront and honest with the person we are trying to communicate with. The issues can be resolved together when approached in an appropriate amount of time. For example: “I can’t afford this medication what can I do or take that will be just as effective?”

Another conversation that has recently occurred is in the authenticity section of the conversation meter which is on the value spectrum. For example: “I have had a lot going on in my personal life and I don’t think I am going to meet this deadline, can you assist me in this research for the client.” This type of communication is authentic and genuine appreciation and focuses on clarifying essential purposes. 3. Discuss your strategies for being a successful student, including how you will incorporate your strengths and address your challenges. My strategies for being a successful student include planning and organization. I am deemed a procrastinator from the five dynamics reflection, so to stay away from procrastination I need to pre-plan. I travel for work; and I am constantly on the road or at the airport. Planning out assignments and tests based on my work schedule/family/life balance. I have created a collage of my goals and placed it in a place I look daily to keep me on track to accomplish my goals. Sometimes, yes procrastination has gotten me into trouble. I sometimes come up with really great ideas after I finish an assignment, but because I hold on and don't submit right away I lose some of the creativity due to procrastination. One of my strengths is being creative and being flexible which will allow me to adapt and overcome obstacles that may stand in my way. I also plan on taking one course at a time to allow myself enough time and grace to complete and pass each course successfully and allow the retention of knowledge by being less overwhelmed. One way to also keep my goal-driven and focused throughout the BSN program is by keeping my personal record of current test scores to allow me to focus on areas of improvement. 4. Reflect on your overall experience in the course and how it applies to two of the following: academic activities, professional career, or personal life.

Professional Communication & Leadership

This course has allowed me to understand my strengths and weakness and areas I need to place more time and energy into. In my personal life, this class has helped me become a more effective listener and more direct in my communication skills. I now understand why it’s important to have communication that is valued within the accuracy and authenticity sections of the conversation meter. In my professional life at work, it has taught me the importance of nonverbal communication and how body language can be interpreted....
