CA1 Productive People: Time Management

Pre-tasks Start by doing the self-correcting exercises which you can find in the classroom in the Resources section: Productive people: Time Management. Y  ou can find the Resources section in the top right corner of the classroom. As you are working through the exercises, take note of any new language you learn, as well as any ideas/tips. You will need these to prepare the Tasks below. When you have finished, share one thing that you have learnt from these Resources (e.g. vocabulary, expressions or grammar) to the I have learnt something today folder in the Forum. Task 1

In this task you must record a video (not an audio) replying to an email from a fictional student. Choose one of the three emails in the A  ppendix and record a video contribution of 1 - 2 minutes, giving advice to that student on how to better manage his or her time. In your video response, you need to include the required language focus (see next page) and follow these steps: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Introduce yourself and identify whose email you are going to respond to; Explain why you have chosen his or her email to respond to; Reply to the different points raised in the email by offering advice and making suggestions; Make a summary of (wrap up) your response.

You can watch a sample video response, which models the above steps and CA1 language focus, on YouTube. Go to Langblog > CA1 Time management for further instructions in a video from your teacher.

RECORDING IN LANGBLOG You can either record directly in Langblog or upload a file you have made offline with another device. You will need to reply to your teacher’s video in order to upload yours. After recording, make sure you check that your video has worked. See also Making a Langblog video in the classroom. 1

CA1 Productive People: Time Management LANGUAGE FOCUS

For this task you will need to use the following structures in the CA1 Resources: the language of giving advice, including both the  first  and second conditionals. When you record your contribution, make sure you use a variety of structures. ORIGINALITY OF YOUR WORK You may prepare some notes but you must use your own words and you must not read directly from a prepared script, from the Internet or a book as that is considered to be plagiarism. For more information, see the section in the Course Plan on plagiarism. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA Please see Assessment and Feedback in the classroom. Task 2 Q & A (LANGBLOG) Watch at least two of your classmates’ videos and think about them carefully as you listen. Think of a question to ask them about what you’ve heard. Then post your response to them in Langblog either as a video or as an audio file. You can ask questions about the content of their talks or ask them to clarify something you didn’t understand. Feel free to continue responding to your classmates in a dialogue!

Post-task REFLECT IN ENGLISH (FORUM) Reflect on the point below and post your response to the CA1 Bad advice folder in the Forum: ●

What is one bad piece of advice you have received on any area of your life? Why do you think it would be unrealistic or unwise for you to follow that advice?

Read your classmates’ posts and respond to one (or more) of them, relating their bad advice to your own situation. Consider whether it would be good or bad for you to follow the advice that is bad for them. Feel free to continue responding to one another in a dialogue!

Hello there, My name's Jane and I need some help organising my time. I've been told that as experienced online students, you might be able to help me. I do hope so as I'm getting rather desperate. You see, last September, I had the bright idea of starting an online degree. My long term objective is quite clear, I want to get promoted. I work in social services and a law degree would really open doors for me. Why did I choose the UOC? Well, the publicity sounded great. It said that you can work at your own pace. You don't have to waste time travelling and attending classes, and you can take as many subjects as you wish. That's all very true but on top of a full time job and domestic commitments, quite frankly I'm hardly sleeping. The other thing is that my little boy has just started school, and he isn't sleeping either. Unfortunately I find that I'm getting behind with my assignments. Though I passed all my subjects in the first term, I'm not sure that I can continue. So please, any advice that you can give me would be gratefully received. Thank you. All the best, Jane

Hi classmates, My name is Claudia and I am 38 years old. My current job allows me to work flexitime, but that may mean working late in the evenings and at the weekends. I also raise my two small boys and study IT (information technology) at the UOC. Therefore, I need to be very organized or else my life is chaos. I usually finish my work day, which includes taking care of my family, about 9.30 p.m. when my sons are in bed. I am so exhausted by then that I have found it is best to wake up at 5 a.m. and do a couple of hours before I head into the office. When I do not have to work at the weekends, I usually study on Saturdays and sometimes on Sundays. My main concerns about studying at the UOC come from combining my professional obligations with my academic ones. As we all know there can be

CA1 Productive People: Time Management tight deadlines in both worlds. Furthermore, there are tasks at the UOC that require group work and my efficiency may not always depend on me. Do you have any advice for how I can minimize my stress? If so, how do you cope with it? I look forward to hearing some of your ideas. Take care, Claudia Email 3

Hey everyone, I am David and very pleased to be in this course. Like most of the students at the UOC, I am studying to further my career. So far, the Business Administration classes for my degree have helped me gain confidence in my day-to-day duties at my day job and I hope this course can as well. During the week, I get home in time to have dinner with my family. I would consider the few precious moments that I get to see them as a break from work and studying. Once everyone is in bed, I log into the campus to find out if there is any important information awaiting me. After such long days at work, I have problems staying focussed when a computer screen is in front of me. It is so tempting to check out some sports scores, read some news or surf the Net. My mobile phone seems to always end up in my hands, too. The saddest part is that anything I do not do during the week, has to be done at the weekends, which is quite a high price to pay. Do any of you face these types of distractions when you are trying to study? Would you mind sharing any tactics with me that may be useful to help me concentrate better? Thanks in advance! Best wishes, David
