Madison Fowler Dr. Tammy Hodo SYD3700 July 5, 2020 Discrimination Sex discrimination is a type of discrimination that Americans have finally come into agreement on that it is wrong. There are several different types of minorities and majorities that society in the United States categorizes us into, whether it be sex, race, or culture. Sex discrimination used to be overlooked, but now it is moreover seen as offensive. Before World War II, women were seen as the lesser sex as it was their role in society to cook, clean, and take care of the children, but now women are encouraged to become a part of the workforce. In the workplace, women are rarely given a chance to participate in a major project, but if they, by chance, happen to get a role in a big project, then they are usually talked about as if they “slept their way to the top”. Many people find it difficult to get past the concept of what women’s roles were viewed as in the past; this is where the discrimination of women comes in. Even though women have proven themselves capable of doing anything that a man can do, they are still seen as a minority. No matter how equal they are to the men, they will always face some type of discrimination. Sex discrimination against women is what most people see as wrong. Still, discrimination against men occurs as well, and it’s often overlooked because it is so uncommon for the majority to be discriminated against. An example of this is when a man chooses to work in a career that is normally seen in society as feminine, such as the fashion industry. If a man works at a bridal

shop, most women will think that he is not as knowledgeable of the industry and will ask for a female associate. Most women may not even realize that they are discriminating against men in this type of situation. This example is not usually seen as the blatant discrimination often seen in the previous example of women in the workforce. The condemnation of this discrimination from the first example is what started the feminism movement because women wanted to feel as if they were no longer the lesser sex. Although it is less prominent, male discrimination still occurs in today’s world and is less condemned than other types of discrimination and mostly overlooked by society. The wealth gap in the United States makes the implication that the top 20 percent carry a heavier weight in society, primarily due to their income than the other 80 percent. It is harder for other racial and ethnic groups to find a way into the top 20 percent since they are constantly fighting forms of discrimination beyond their control, such as skin color. The views of the richer and wealthier members of society tend to hold more prominence than those that fall into the poor and middle class. This dominant effect on society has been around for decades and will possibly become worse over time if the distribution were to become more skewed to the right....
