Kylie Donnelly 4/16/20 Mus131 Chapter Summaries Week 4 Ch.38- Foster blended traditions in his Parlor songs. These songs are known as being sweet, sentimental, and nostalgic. Ch.39- The piano was widely used between amateurs at home and professionals in performances. The piano grew as an instrument that shaped the Romantic culture and was used to perform melody and harmony all in one. Ch.40- In the world of music women made careers and professions as musicians. Hensel's piano cycle The Year s hows her true artistry. Ch.41- Absolute or Pure music is musical patterns that are made without meaning. In the nineteenth century Program music was very important and helped make connections. Ch.42- Concert overture is a known type of Romantic program music. A popular type of program music is identical music, which consists of overture. Ch.43- People thought that program music was actually taking a step backwards. Music grew in the public eye more and more as professionals started performing in concert halls and the orchestra had become very large. Ch.44- Opera seria and opera buffa were both favored in the world of music. Verdi’s music represents drama, passion, and emotion. Ch.45- Drama and emotion can come through during films. Scenes with spoken dialogue and not much singing is Melodrama.

Ch.46- In France and Russia Ballet became a dramatic form of expression through dance in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Nutcracker b ecame very well known as a christmas ballet tradition. Ch.47- In the twentieth century Post-Romanticism became a very important movement. Puccini was the main voice in a group of people in an opera. Ch.48- The Melodie song tradition is similar to the German Lied tradition. In the French opera there wasn’t just music but it also included dancing. Ch.49- At the end of the nineteenth century impressionism was characterised by exotic scales. Impressionism was influential to talented artists but also was seen as a revolt against tradition. Ch.50- Black slaves made a tradition of sacred songs/music. The Harlem Renaissance was for african american artists who claimed a high culture. Ch.51- Ragtime was a piano style made by african americans by different rhythms. Sousa wrote over 130 marches for bands and dances also....
