Summary

Assignments on the documentary film "Chasing Ice", and how glaciers and ice masses are melting rapidly....

Description

1. Describe Balog's approach to taking photos of glaciers. Which techniques worked? Which didn't? Balog is really hands on, he gets in the water and submerges himself in the environment. Techniques that worked were taking pictures from different angles and locations around glaciers as well as timelapse photos, using different circuits to properly work the cameras. The ones that didn’t work were when the harsh conditions became too strong for the equipment and blew the cameras off the rocks, many timer failures.

2. At film time ~18:44 an EIS team member is shown to be throwing a large stone a few feet ahead of him as he walks. Why do you imagine that he does this? To make sure the ice is stable they are walking on and so he doesn’t fall into water.

3. Name the four locations where Blalog chooses to photograph glaciers? Iceland. Greenland. Alaska. Montana. 4. How did ice core data convince James about the reality of climate change? It showed the history of the ice. It showed what the temperature was at a certain time as well as the carbon dioxide. He was convinced that the air is changing.

5. Do the scenes depicting wildfire and extreme weather events add to the narrative about melting ice? Why or why not? It tied into the change in the climate of the world and tied into also why glaciers are melting. 6. What do you find most compelling about the images of melting glaciers? I find it very compelling how fast the glaciers are melting. In the beginning of the documentary, after 6 months, the solheim glacier melted immensely. Just shows that, if possible, something needs to be done.

7. Do you have questions about the effects of climate (and climate change) on glaciers that were not addressed in the film? No questions currently.

8. What is calving and how does it shape the impact of the film on the viewer? Its when segments of ice sheets separate and fall off into the ocean water. It shows how rapidly ice is being diminished into the ocean at an alarming rate.

9. Are there any scenes in the film that you feel could have been cut? The scene where he was wrapping his knees and talking about surgery. It didn’t have anything to do with the film. 10. Throughout the film, Blalog discusses his belief that photographs are essential in raising awareness about human-caused climate change. At the conclusion of his movie, do you agree? Yes I agree. It shows the dramatic effects of human activity on the planet....
