Chasing Ice media response part 2

One of the hardest things to in life is admit defeat. In Balog’s situation, he has been defeated by the surgery he underwent on his knee. You can see the sheer pain and sadness through his eyes when he tells his colleagues to “you guys should at least go and look at one of the cameras get it downloaded to get the computer changed today ((Orlowski et al. Chasing Ice).” The upset is seen through his facial expressions. In my eyes, I see Balog as the type of person who does not like getting help with things and is very comfortable in doing them himself. Unfortunately, I have not had much experience with photography; however, I can imagine the feeling of working on something alone for years and then being unable to collect the data that you ultimately found yourself. Seeing the glaciers melting infront of my eyes is really disappointing, as Balog says “you can’t divorce civilization from nature. We totally depend on it ((Orlowski et al. Chasing Ice).” This quote really made me think about the connections between nature and civilization and it became apparent to me that civilization really does depend on nature. Everything we do has some sort of connection to nature. If there was no atmosphere, there would be nothing. The ozone layer would be gone, there would be no protection from harmful radiations and therefore there would be no life on earth. Balog sees himself and his photography as a messenger, a way to raise awareness. He is doing exactly that. The way he raises awareness is very helpful for people like myself that find it difficult to understand what is going on when explained in words only. As Balog shows his timelapse for different glaciers it is clear what is changing and the factors contributing to the

changes. This visual representation gives people who will never be able to visit these places in the world a chance to see what is going on, it takes away the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ complex.
