Description

HIST-220 Professor Walden Spring 2020 Mise En Scene as described by Citizen Kane To fit into the category of mise en scene, a film or production would have to possess the following elements: setting, décor, lighting, depth of space, costume and makeup to name a few in order to portray a mise en scene. In Citizen Kane, during the moment when Susan is doing her opera performance, Orson Welles made sure to emphasize the use of costume that she was wearing during her performance as well as her make up and hair. During the different periods of Kane’s life, instead of using another actor, Orson used makeup to make him look older as time looked on as well as the other characters. The use of light and space of depth was notable in the last scene involving Kane, emphasizing the size of the room and the volume of his possessions that filled the mansion as well as his reflection on the wall that carried his image for what looked like miles. Another scene that can be interpreted as mise en scene would be the shot where he was a child in 1871 and he’s playing in the snow, and all the entire setting is white and empty except for Kane himself and a snowman in his depth of field. The direction has complete control over the entire scene, dictating that the focus be on Kane and the snowman, indicating how even as a child he was mainly alone. Then, when Kane’s mother comes into frame, it is then that we realize that we are peering at him through an open window, and as the camera pans back we get more views of the settings of Kane’s life, as well as his childhood home....
