Mise-en-Scene Wes Anderson is one of the most well-known directors whom use Mise-en-Scene to achieve unique aesthetics in his films. The Grand Budapest Hotel is another film in which Wes Anderson attains a very unique aesthetics with the use of settings, costumes and makeup, lighting, and staging. The Grand Budapest Hotel primarily takes place at a handful of locations; all of which are vivid and colorful. The use of vivid colors on the set, specifically at the hotel, emphasized the grand nature of the hotel and what it stood for; which was to support the flamboyant lifestyles of its guests. The costumes and makeup per character were rather precise to complement each other. For example, the character Dmitri and Jopling, both antagonists, wore completely black outfits. This was done to convey that these characters were evil and sinister. Generally, throughout the film, many of the characters wore unique costumes to distinguish each character. Throughout the duration of the film, high-key lighting was used to enforce a light-hearted and comedic mood. For instance, the film as many potentially gruesome scenes throughout it, like the head in the basket and the chopping off a man’s fingers but the film continued holding its light-hearted mood. Most of the film is made up of frontal shots, side shots, and long shots of the medium shot type. This allows for showing constant interaction between characters. Specifically, Gustave and Zero are almost always in frame with one another, alluding to the idea that Zero views Gustave as a companion. This is further demonstrated by Zero’s willingness to help Gustave no matter the situation, he is always there. Overall, Wes Anderson does a spectacular job at manipulating Mise-en-Scene in order to convey his unique sense of tone and aesthetic in The Grand Budapest Hotel. In general, I feel that Wes Anderson performs the same job in all of his films to make them one-of-a-kind....
