Mise En Scene Exercise – The Intouchables

Setting/Location: In the air Props: Paraglide Type: Medium Close-up Shot Angle: Low Angle Shot Movement within the frame: Figures entering and exiting frame Costumes: Philippe and the instructor are wearing paraglide overalls

In this image, the viewer can see two middle-aged white men, Philippe and his instructor paragliding. They are both wearing overalls and helmets. The location of the scene is in the air and the mountains. A somewhat majestic or even dream-like scenario that brings emotions to the viewer, as we feel uplifted, and empowered as we watch these humans fly over this magnificent backdrop, seeming tiny in comparison to the enormous scenery. The mountains we see in the background are blurred but still prominent showing us that the problems and challenges in Philippe’s life are still present but are out of focus. The reason for this being that paragliding makes him calm and brings him control over his issues. A Low Angle Shot was used to get an image of Philippe with the mountainous background. This shot can also be classified as a two-person shot, simply meaning that there are two people in the frame participating in an activity together. Not only is the scenery beautiful, but also seeing Philippe, a paraplegic man, happy and finally overcoming something that he has feared for so long is really beautiful. This scene presents ideas about freedom and leaves the audience with a good feeling. We are presented with this quadriplegic man who can’t control his own body and has very little control over his life. This is the one place where Philippe can feel free, where his disability isn't stopping him from doing something liberating....
