C1 Advanced Course LESSON 1 - GRAMMAR Discourse Markers
Look at the different functions of linking words Focus on word order Focus on register (formal or informal) Practise by choosing the most appropriate linking words.
Function Discourse markers are words and phrases used in speaking and writing to 'signpost' discourse. Discourse markers do this by showing turns, joining ideas together, showing attitude, and generally controlling communication.
Linkers
Word order and register Result So: within a sentence linking two clauses. As a result, therefore and consequently: often at the beginning.
Reason
Because, as and since: introduce clauses of reason. As and since are often at the beginning. Because of, due to and owing to: followed by a noun, gerund or the fact that.
Purpose To, in order to and so as to: introduce a clause of purpose. Followed by infinitive. In case
Contrast But: usually within the sentence linking two contrasting points. Yet: a more formal "but". However, and nevertheless: normally at the start of a sentence. Although, though and even though (more emphatic) In spite of and despite: followed by a gerund, noun or the fact that.

known as a versatile and delexicalised (forms expressions which meanings have nothing to do with the core meaning of the word) verb.
Idiom
