Description

Erika Silva Chapter 11

11.1 Explain the importance of understanding communication in organizations Your success within organizations comes from you ability to communicate. If you want an organization to hire you, you have to display good interviewing skills and then if you want a promotion you have to understand your boss’s goals and beliefs. If you seek public office you must have strong public-speaking and social-influence skills to gain support. 11.4 Discuss the current social political influences on organizations and organizational communication Globalization – the increasing connectedness of the world in economic, political, and cultural realms. New social Contract- assumes that loyalty is not expected by workers or organizations and that job security is unlikely. The rise of urgent organizations- companies that try to shorten the time it takes to develop new products and respond to customer demands( Apple) . this causes the employees to be under immense pressure to increase productivity and response time. Bullying- repeated hostile behaviors that are or are perceived to be intended to harm parties who are unable to defend themselves. 11.5 Distinguish between individual and communal perspectives on organizational ethics Individual ethics within an organization means that everyone is responsible for themselves and their actions, so if something goes wrong they shouldn’t blame someone higher up/ use it as an excuse. This seems similar to what Nazis did as in ‘I was just taking orders’ instead of ‘you’re right I’m a nazi I participated on my own accord’. Communal ethics in organizations means that everyone would share the blame as a whole. The higher ups can be held responsible for the actions of others. 11.6 Identify four steps involved in a strategic approach to conflict management 1) you should know first what you want to accomplish out of this interaction,do you want an apology? A compromise? Go into the conflict interaction knowing what you want. 2) decide if the issue is worth confronting or worth confronting them over now. You may know what you want out of it but do you have a good chance of accomplishing that goal? How will they react. 3) try to understand their side of the story/their goals. Recognize that your attributions may be incorrect and that you probably will need to talk to the other party to determine what their motivations really are. 4)think about when and where this conflict should take place. And what tactics will be most effective. Chose a time of peace/relative calmness and where nothing will interrupt or get in the way. This should happen in private also.
