Description

Heat of Combustion Analysis Part II

Draft - 2

Each student group should be performing the Combustion Calorimeter Experiment to determine Heat of Combustion and Enthalpy of formation of a Hydrocarbon during one of the 2-week lab periods in the next 6 weeks. As a change - this semester all student groups are performing an experiment to determine Heat of Combustion of a common food item. Examples: peanuts, cheese, French-fry, … etc., (see partial list below). This is an option in place of the usual third set of two runs (experiment) on a liquid ester or acid. You can still choose the liquid chemical – just let the Prof or TA know. The second week of this lab experiment starts this component of the lab for the groups that are doing the Combustion Calorimetry Experiment allows you to choose a food item to determine the enthalpy of combustion and the calories / gram that are given off via oxidation with O2 of that food item. You are also asked to determine the calories per serving and to indicate how the serving size was determined. If you have some food item you wish to study, please try to bring it when you have the second week of this lab. We also have several liquid items in the lab for you to choose from. Each Group is required to run the food sample two times, as with the methyl benzoic acid standard for heat capacity of the calorimeter, and the hydrocarbon or other organic for determination of heat of combustion and enthalpy of formation. You are also requested to determine the calories in a typical serving of the item, example – you may analyze one gram of a piece of pizza, but you can then determine the calories in a slice. Sample food items. - Peanuts – salt removed or no-salt - M&M s

or M&M peanuts or other similar candy.

- French fry

-

Pancake syrup

-

Salad oil

-

Piece of Pizza

-

Potato – dry

-

A vegetable

-

Piece of bagel or bread – dry

-

Piece of a cereal

 Many items – you may think of. One condition is that no two groups should study / analyze the same food item....
