Description

Communication Reflection Paper

During this semester, I have learned the importance of public speaking and how to do it more efficiently. After studying different techniques and practicing various speeches, I believe I became a much better speaker than I was before. The lessons I learned in this class, I believe, will be very valuable for me in the future because I intend to achieve a position in management, where being able to communicate effectively to others is crucial. I have not had many opportunities to apply the skills I gained in this class yet, but even in casual day-to-day conversations with friends, I do believe I have become more eloquent when elaborating on mi ideas.

Throughout the course, my main concern with the speeches was that I was not going to be able to manage my time correctly in the different speeches. Fortunately, I learned that by practicing my speeches with a timer I could improve and know beforehand approximately how long each of my speeches would be. Of course, it helped that I already expected this problem to occur, so I was able to anticipate and fix it. I think that due to the large number of speeches we were given throughout the course, I was able to improve each new speech my timing. On the other hand, I was also worried that my speeches would get too boring quickly, but some useful techniques learned in class about how to keep the audience engaged helped me overcome that as well.

When looking back at the beginning of the semester, I recall my main goal was to become a great public speaker who would be able to speak fluently and in an entertaining way about any topic at any given time. I believe I have made great progress towards that goal, but I can definitely keep improving. I have learned, however, that no matter how skilled someone is at public speaking, preparation is key. Therefore, I don’t think I will ever be able to give great speeches without knowing my topic beforehand. As for my future goals, I would like to improve how much I can connect with the audience. I think the difference between a good public speaker and a great one is the ability to actually connect and influence the audience. The ability to have an impact on the audience is a skill I have yet not mastered but would like to learn.

In conclusion, I can say with confidence that I have become a better public speaker than I was before, but I still have room for improvement. I think public speaking is a lifelong learning skill and so I will always try to grow upon it. The lessons learned in this class will probably help me in future classes for presentations and eventually for when I get a job too, thus why it’s important that I don’t forget them. I am thankful for the skills I have developed along the semester in this class and hope I can continue to grow as a public speaker.
