Description

Aida Ruiz Romero

Coser y cantar, a play by Dolores Prida, where we find Ella and She, which are the same woman. They represent two cultures and languages that are present in the life of a bilingual person. In this play, we are referring to the Latin culture in the case of Ella, and to the Anglo-American culture when we are referring to She. As the subtitle says, it is a bilingual fantasy dealing with identity and how it is formed her identity. We need to have in mind how difficult is for that particular woman, an immigrant, to adapt to a country with different culture and language from your own. Prida vindicates that it is necessary to accept both cultures to survive as an immigrant in a new country as it is the USA in this play. At the end of the text we appreciate a kind of solution, both sides of that woman must be together, the Latin and the Anglo, if she wants to preserve in the American society. “La conciencia de la mestiza”, is an article by Gloria Anzaldúa, where she expresses the meaning of being Mestizo and how they have to fight against physical and imaginary borders separation. This commentary shares ideas with the play Coser y cantar. For instance, la mestiza is a product of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual, the same as we have seen with Ella and She, speaking in Spanish and English. Furthermore, we can appreciate that in both appears the theme of biculturalism, since in la mestiza Anzaldúa refers to white culture, Mexican culture. The same happens when it is said that she is a cross-breeding, which is equivalent to that bilingualism (also seen in some part of the text) and biculturalism that suffers the woman in Coser y cantar.
